Examining who faces the most challenging season for the Cleveland Browns and why.
Hot seats in the NFL are typically reserved for head coaches and general managers. For the Browns, the heat is on team president Mike Holmgren.
The Browns added hope when they hired Holmgren as their top executive after he returned the Packers to prominence and guided the Seahawks to the Super Bowl. Rebuilding has been more of a challenge with the Browns, who have won nine games in Holmgren's two seasons. Instead of turning into a winner, the franchise has spun its wheels under Holmgren and the fan base is becoming skeptical.
This is a big year for the Holmgren regime because a potential franchise quarterback (Brandon Weeden) and star running back (Trent Richardson) were drafted in the first round to go with a top-10 defense. Holmgren has promised a "pretty good jump" for the Browns, so another four- or five-win season isn't going to cut it. It's time for Holmgren to erase past mistakes like keeping Eric Mangini around as head coach for a year and failing to trade up for quarterback Robert Griffin III in this year's draft.
Holmgren had a more immediate impact at his other stops. In Green Bay, he inherited a four-win team and led the Packers to the playoffs by his second season. In Seattle, he took over a team that hadn't been to the playoffs in 10 years and guided the Seahawks to the playoffs in his first season. The pressure is on Holmgren to show signs of a similar turnaround in Cleveland.

-Still think they are being pussies about the QB situation.
-Sounds like D'Qwell is getting back in football shape. Nothing to be alarmed about.
-Are they really THAT ok at guard? Why not just resign Steinbach to help with these rookies? It doesn't seem like anyone else wants him.
-Fujita will get hurt during OTAs, minicamps or training camp, so his suspension wouldn't even matter.
-I think not having Brown play safety would be a mistake. Maybe not this year, but looking down the line, it would be a good move for both the team and Brown's career imo. They should try him out at some reps there.

Is the hand-wringing over the Browns wide receiving corps distracting from concerns at linebacker? 7 Comments |
|||
At Nos. 22, 37 and with most every subsequent pick thereafter, the Cleveland Browns passed on selecting a wide receiver in the 2012 NFL Draft. There was one — Travis Benjamin — who was taken in the fourth round. He’s not exactly penned into the Browns’ starting lineup Sept. 9. Since the second-round selections of Mohamed Massaquoi and Brian Robiskie in 2009 did not turnout to be the second coming of Jerry Rice and John Taylor, improving the Browns’ wide receiving corps has been a hotly debated topic. No doubt it will continue after the Browns failed to add any pass catchers in free agency and only one in the draft. Yet as we inch toward the 2012 season, the Browns’ wide receivers may not be the team’s position group with the least overall talent and lacking the most depth. That title could be reserved for the Browns’ linebackers, led by 2011 starters D’Qwell Jackson, Scott Fujita and Chris Gocong. Jackson is the bright post. The 28-year-old was finally healthy for an entire season in 2011. Jackson finished with 158 tackles (116 solo) with 3.5 sacks one forced fumble and one interception. In February, he was rewarded with a new five-year deal. From there the talent level begins to thin. Fujita, while a crafty veteran, is a crafty veteran because he is 33 years old. He is clearly on the downside of his career. Moreover, the Browns will be without Fujita for the first three games of 2012, as he serves his suspension from the fallout of Bounty Gate. Finally, Gocong delivered some memorable hits in 2011 at strong-side linebacker and he did sign a three-year contract extension last September. He is at his best going north and south, but sometimes gets lost in the shuffle going sideline-to-sideline. Then, in alphabetical order, is the remainder of the Browns’ linebacking corps, according to their roster on the team’s web site: Emmanuel Acho, Benjamin Jacobs, James-Michael Johnson, Kaluka Maiava, Craig Robertson and Quinton Spears. Suddenly, the Greg Little-Mohamed Massaquoi-Josh Cribbs trio at wide out doesn’t look nearly as troubling. “In our opinion, it’s not a great linebacker draft,” Browns general manager Tom Heckert said before last month’s draft. “That’s not saying we aren’t going to get one. It’s just not (a great class). I don’t know how else to say it. Hopefully we can get some young guys in here and see what they do.” Well, the Browns did draft two linebackers, but not until later rounds. Johnson, who was selected with the 25th pick of the fourth round, comes to the Browns with a similar background as Jackson. Johnson (6-1, 241) played inside and outside linebacker at Nevada, where he proved himself a productive tackler. While he can tackle, his lack of speed may prevent him from adequately covering tight ends in the NFL. Johnson has a chance to compete with Kaluka Maiava for a key back up or starting position. Maiava has simply underwhelmed since being drafted by the Browns in the fourth round in 2009. Acho was taken with the 34th pick of the sixth round and he features a similar body type to Johnson — 6-1, 238. Like Johnson, Acho is a sure tackler and, like Johnson, Acho does not have good speed. Did you catch the common theme between Acho and Johnson? Both are sure tacklers. In addition, the Browns bolster their defensive line in free agency with Juqua Parker and Frostee Rucker and the draft by taking players with similar skill sets in defensive tackles John Hughes and Billy Winn, who now need to step up with the loss of Phil Taylor. The Browns have not stopped the run since 1999 and, quietly, the Browns are taking steps to improve that deficiency. Run the ball, stop the run. It's a pretty simple philosophy that has won a lot of professional football games. For now, there is not much the Browns can do to drastically improve their linebacking corps. The Browns could be OK if Johnson and Acho adapt quickly to the professional game; If Fujita and Jackson stay healthy and if the improved defensive line could mask issues with the linebackers. That's a lot of ifs. http://cle.scout.com/2/1188159.html |

Maybe it's just me, but I LOVED the JMJ and Acho picks. I honestly think both could be solid contributors at the LB and ST positions.

John Kuntz, The Plain Dealer The Browns "fully expect'' Brandon Weeden to be their guy this season.
AKRON, Ohio -- On the eve of organized team activities, when Brandon Weeden and Colt McCoy will practice with the full squad together for the first time, Browns general manager Tom Heckert clarified the nature of the competition.
"You can write about it and talk about it however you want. The best guy is going to play and we fully Brandon to be that guy,'' Heckert said at the Akron Browns Backers Banquet at Tangier Restaurant. "That's our goal is to have him be the guy.
"I think when we say, open competition, the best guy's going to play, that's just the way it is. But we drafted Brandon Weeden to be that guy. (You) draft a guy 22nd in the draft, you think he's going to be that guy.''
He said he saw of Weeden in rookie camp, "He's got a strong arm, he's accurate, he's smart and picking up the offense was nothing for him.''
He said nothing should be read into who takes the first snaps in OTAs Tuesday: "We're going to be rotating the guys all over the place.
Whatever you see out there, take it for what it's worth. We've got a long way to go.''
He said all four quarterbacks, including Seneca Wallace and Thad Lewis have looked good: "Obviously Brandon's the guy we thought he was. So far he's looked great. Colt's looked good and Seneca (Wallace) has looked good and Thad (Lewis). We're excited to see them all get in there and throw it around this week.''
On Phil Taylor returning this season: "100%(he'll be back) I don't think there's any question about that. We think he'll be back end of October, early November, he'll definitely be back. It's six months at the most, and that's being very, very cautious. He could be back earlier than that.''
Heckert also said:
* Browns linebacker Scott Fujita, who's appealing his three-game suspension for the bounty scandal, is participating in OTAs.
* Linebacker D'Qwell Jackson, who's back stiffened on Monday, may or may not be ready to practice on Tuesday. "If not, he'll be back soon,'' Heckert said.
* Cornerback Sheldon Brown will remain a cornerback. "Sheldon Brown is never going to play safety (as long as I'm here). He's a cornerback.''
* Contracts for Weeden and Trent Richardson aren't done yet, but there will be no problem.

The two years that game officials worked practices (OTAs, minicamp and during the season) the team was near the top (I think 2nd and 5th) for least penalized (number and yardage). The year before and last year they were in the 20's.SportsAndLady;1177310 wrote:Weren't they the least penalized team (or one of) the year he implemented real refs at the OTAs?
