Maybe if he didn't, they'd actually fire him and seek to deny him severance or pension (I believe that can be done under certain circumstances, though don't quote me.). Whether or not they had a realistic shot of making that happen is another matter, but I doubt he wanted to go through all that either way, and he probably figured that January 10th wasn't that far away if it meant they'd leave him alone until then.
He's a great man, but I think he's been tired of school politics for a long time. Maybe not. Maybe he has the same "fight the corrupt system" mentality that so many of his proponents have, but could you blame him if he didn't? If he was just tired of it and wanted to quietly coach great football in peace?
