Penn State is on an island right now and there isn't anything anyone can say or do to change that...they effed up huge here and it needs to play out without interference from any source.
Say something. It's not about making things better or worse but simply acknowledging it.

THIS.reclegend22;964072 wrote:Some of us really need to take a step back, remove ourselves from the situation for at least a few moments, and then stop calling for the rape of Joe Paterno. Think about what some of you are saying. It's completely ill-thought-out and ridiculous. Those talking anything about sentencing Joe Paterno to homosexual purgatory are foolish and sound incredibly creepy in their own right, and should simply stop.
Matt Millen, although overcome with great anger and shame with regard to the actions transpiring at his university, shed a voice of reason today. As sad and reprehensible a situation as this is, Joe Paterno deserves to have his side of the story fully heard and given the same thoughtful consideration as the stories of everyone else involved in this unfortunate case. Despite what some here are alleging, Paterno has repeatedly denied that he was ever aware of anything sexual happening between Sandusky and anyone, and reiterated that message during an emotional meeting with his players on Monday. He says he didn't know. And, until otherwise proven, I will go out on a "thin branch" and believe the word of the man who, until this week, was regarded by virtually everyone as the most respected and upstanding sports coach in the history of American athletics. I think Millen said it best when he stated that we just can't know what Paterno was actually told, or how marginalized the story might have become by the time it reached the Nittony Lion head coach. It is simply one man's word versus another.
Think about it for a moment. Consider the idea that Paterno is lying through his teeth and that he actually knew. Why would a man who has coached and taught for over six decades at a school he so dearly loves and whose legacy he basically built, an institution in which he has served for well over half a century carving a legacy of achievement, strong moral principal and a demand for doing things the right way, all-of-a-sudden throw all of that away in order to allow his linebacker coach to use the Penn State shower room as his lair to have intercourse with prepubescent children? Give me a damn break.
I find a huge amount of hypocrisy in guys like writerbuckeye who were (rightfully) screaming at people for jumping to conclusions before due process with Ohio State but aren't here. For the record, I'm not suggesting in any way that these are equal.
Sandusky isn't raping anyone anymore. We can afford to give Joe Paterno the time he is due to explain his side of the story before we crucify him. We owe him, and anyone really, that much at the very least.

Exactly. This had been happening for so long and likely resulted in Sandusky not being the future head coach, and his resignation.Con_Alma;964109 wrote:They were friends outside of football. Any normal person would have asked his friend what the hell was going on.
Either Paterno is a child predator enabler or the biggest moron on the planet. Neither deserve to coach a team.

Because he could get by with it. These were at-risk kids that likely didn't have a father, and few boys report sexual abuses due to the stigma and embarrassment attached to it.
These were powerful men that acted in their own interests at the expense of the weakest.
A sickening situation. This is the worst college sports scandal ever.

You mean the fact that it was reported at earliest 1998, he was gone in 1999, and most of these were reported AFTER he was no longer a coach. I think your timeline is a little off there...Manhattan Buckeye;964182 wrote:Exactly. What do you suppose the motivation of McQueary was to lie about what he told Paterno? He hung himself out to dry MORE by doing so.
What does the police chief have to gain by lying about Paterno's negligence?
When so many others knew, the most powerful man at the school and close friend of the accused was kept in the dark?
Let's use SOME logic when talking about this, even if you are inexplicably still a Paterno fan.
Why do people do stupid/bad things ever? Very few people are entirely/obviously evil. You could say the same about Sandusky, why would a respected football coach, charitable contributor, and family man rape a bunch of little kids in the shower? Why would any of the multiple other people who covered this thing up do what they did?Why would a man who has coached and taught for over six decades at a school he so dearly loves and whose legacy he basically built, an institution in which he has served for well over half a century carving a legacy of achievement, strong moral principal and a demand for doing things the right way, all-of-a-sudden throw all of that away in order to allow his linebacker coach to use the Penn State shower room as his lair to have intercourse with prepubescent children? Paterno isn't some deity. He never was and after this, he certainly never will be.
His best case scenario was that he told the AD and thought nothing more of it when he knew Sandusky was still using PSU facilities and working with kids for over a decade later. When the BEST case scenario is that he didn't even seem to take strong allegations of child rape seriously, and the worst case is he was a part of the seemingly extensive cover up for said rapist, it's time to give up the hero worship.

1) The timeline is the key. Why do you think Sandusky retired unexpectedly?lhslep134;964192 wrote:You mean the fact that it was reported at earliest 1998, he was gone in 1999, and most of these were reported AFTER he was no longer a coach. I think your timeline is a little off there...
2) The fact that most of the reports are after Paterno/PSU knew they had a monster on their hands makes them look worse.

I don't owe any one shit! He is a public official! He knew what are some of you thinking? Read the damn PDF. Paterno freaking knew of at the very least the 2002 incident in the shower. He in my mind had to know of the 98 allegation and there is no way that wasn't the reason for Sandusky's retirement. Look I like JoPa and he did wonders for college football and probably thousands of young men however so far the now 9 victims he let down and so far that's 9 too many!

Manhattan you had said it had been going on a long time and that was why he wasn't considered for future head coach. But he was let go shortly after it had come out, so how could you say it affected him being named future head coach? That's all I'm saying.

I'm saying they knew something was up with a top coach that was hurting young boys. THEY DID NOTHING!

Agreed. Quite frankly, the way it is being handled, in addition to the inexplicable amount of PSU apologists that still exist, is nothing more than further slaps in the face of all of the victims.Fab1b;964207 wrote:I don't owe any one shit! Logic doesn't seem to be what the Paterno defenders are interested in. It seems as though anything short of a video tape of Paterno cheering on Sandusky through the rape won't be enough for them.Manhattan Buckeye;964203 wrote:1) The timeline is the key. It will all come to light soon enough. Again, Sandusky isn't raping kids anymore, we have the luxury of time here. Paterno has done nothing illegal, he deserves to speak.

Do you honestly believe Sandusky's pattern of behavior exists only in the time frame within we're discussing. He's a multiple time child rapist, that's not something you start and quit at random intervals of time. He's likely been raping little boys before he was a coach, when he was a coach, and after he was a coach. And he'd still be doing it if this all hadn't come to light(unfortunately over a decade too late resulting in more young kids being raped.)Tobias Fünke;964221 wrote:"You know what they say about assuming right?" Everyone hates Sandusky. But no one is defending him, so there's nothing to respond to. Paterno on the other hand...Skyhook79;964227 wrote:JoePa is a Public official? Whats amazing to me is the absolute hatred for Joe Paterno and hardly any mention of the man who actually committed the acts.

" Paterno has done nothing illegal, he deserves to speak. "
Agreed, I look forward to his speech why he let a child molester on his program's property for so long and did nothing to help his "friend" stop molesting children.
He did nothing illegal, but morally engaged in actions (or non-actions) that ruined the lives of innocent children.
I don't claim to be a leader or legend, but if I hear from a 3rd year associate that she witnessed a senior partner engaging in improper behavior with a minor in the restroom, I don't just let it go. Even if it costs me my job.

Because Sandusky's defense will likely be "I was abused as a child" or "I need mental help". There is no defense for the cover up.
