Okay...I thought I knew a lot about football. Obviously I don't know enough. I am calling a game tonight (radio) and I'm putting together my "scouting reports" to use for the broadcast.

In one HC's starting defensive line-up he lists one player as a "Hawk" and one player as a "Jack."

They run a 4-2 look. 4 DL, 2 LB's...then this "hawk" and "jack."

Does anyone know what the fuck they are so I can pass the information along to our 4 listeners?

I'm assuming they are like a LB/CB hybrid. Play as LB's on running/blitzing plays and CB on passing/coverage plays...but that is a total guess. Don't know if this helps...but the hawk is averaging 8 tackles per game and has 3 INT's in 3 games.

I'm too ashamed to ask the coach...

Reps to whomever can answer this the best and provides some type of backing behind it's validity.

My guess is that they are the outside "LB's." They will switch sides based on the offensive alignment. One could act as a 3rd linebacker, and one could act as a strong safety. Your other three would be your CB, CB, and FS.

Never heard of hawk and jack, maybe its just their own terminology? I've also never heard of a team running a 4-2 front. That would leave 5 defensive back positions so I doubt those two are LB/DB hybrids. Could just be jack lines up in the strong side of the offensive formation and hawk goes to the weak side.


Edit: misread op, probably just different names for field/boundary corners or free/strong safety.

Someone rep me...I got the balls to ask the coach. Here's a lesson for everyone and his explanation via email: "Yes they are a cross between a SS and LB. We can go with a 4-4 look at times, or stay in the 4-2."

Sounds like a fancy name for a 4-4, aka they may not be able to stop the run with 7 inside and 4 dbs, so they add a lb/db hybrid into the box. Sounds like hawk is weakside (no te side) and jack is strongside (te side). Hopefully 3 out of the 4 listeners will understand your vivid descriptions, plus it gives you something to talk about while coaches take all 25 seconds to send in the plays.

You can look up the bear defense from the 80s and the dolphin D from the 70s (5-3) and check your xbox/ps games and see if they found it on one of those games. Could be a nickel package like karen lotz says, and on run plays they put bigger kids in those spots, with faster db kids in on passing plays. Let us know.

4-2-5 defensive
Strong defensive for a spread offensive team
strong safety (Monster back) could be called a "hawk" playing the wide side of the field
"Jack" in this case is the strong linebacker mirroring ( goes where he goes) on one running back and moving to that side of the field

The 4-2-5 plus more speeded on the filed and less reading of keys and more on stopping individual player on a spread offensive team

Wasn't it the famous S&L who didn't know what Mike & Sam are? Never heard of "Jack" but the "Hawk" term has always meant a hybrid SS / LB type player. Waaay back in the day...Wooddy Hayes called it the "Monster" and Jack Tatum was probably the first to play it.

TCU runs a 4-2-5 base defense.
