Gomes did sign that deal before last season started (2 yrs, 2.25 mn. Club option for 12. Reds can buyout plus 200K if at bat threshold isn't met) . I think he wants to hammer pitches in and looks fastball at all times. That isn't a terrible strategy for him, because he isn't paid to hit singles to the opposite field. The problem is he is getting one fastball per ab, and that is usually the first pitch. He then forces himself to fight through at bats, hoping to get into more fastball counts. Once you are down 0-1, your next fastball count is 2-1, maybe 3-1. That is a tough spot to be in when you aren't a contact hitter.

Gomes would likely go on waivers first, some team may give him a shot, but at that point he would either have to accept assignment to AAA or be released. AAA would be a good place for him to improve his confidence, because he will likely see more fastballs. But the problem waits for him back in the majors. Dusty will bury him on the bench and make him ph only before he gets released though. Even then, he steals pinch hit abs from Cairo, who is tearing it up as a ph this year.

The last 7 games or so it seems that Stubbs is smartening up some cutting down the swing a bit and hitting .344 with .441 on base %. His Ks improved during that period from about 30% of appearances to about 20%.

also, just to throw this out there. I would love to see Blake Dewitt in a Reds uniform. Plays second, third, and left field. Contact hitter, grinds out at bats, and could be a good two hole hitter to see pitches for Votto.

My point is that Gomes, just like Bruce and BP and others, in order to get pitches to pull and drive has to keep the pitchers honest by going oppo so they can get their fair share of pitches to pull.

You're in the camp that everyone else is in...jordo is probably the only one who thinks heisey still can be the answer with extended playing time.

Amazing how well Stubbs has done since Heisey hit 2 more HR....swing seems a little more compact and putting the ball in play....which makes him very formidable.

I do think Garcia getting out guys low and in would've been a good matchup for Heisey....but Gomes did pretty good.

Like Brantley says, stiff competition at every position can't be anything but good.

LOL. Heisey has 12 HRs in limited freaking playing time. He has 1 more HR than Stubbs in 194 fewer ABs

You can disagree about Heisey being the leadoff guy, but to argue he can't be a major contributor in the lineup is kind of stupid.

When did I EVER say he can't contribute?!?

I simply said he shouldn't be our.everyday starting LF. He's been given his chance to be a starter and has failed...aside from a couple multi HR games, he hasn't shown he can be the man for a very important position on a contending team.

I don't know that Heisey is the answer, but to act like he has had a fair chance, wouldn't be realistic. With that being said, you ride Stubbs while he is playing well.

When was Heisey given a chance to be the starting left fielder? I must have missed those 2 months of the season....oh you mean when he played in 3 games back to back. Give me a break, you can't say he can't be a starter after the chances he's been given thus far. Knowing full well if he doesn't hit 3 out he won't be starting the next.....and even if he does he probably still won't. On top of that he can't be any worse than Gomes has been.

Yeah he hasn't been given 20 straight starts, sure. But he's had plenty of at-bats, and has yet to prove he can play everyday and produce like a LF on a contending team should.

And I even like Heisey.

There is nobody producing like you would want your LF to, but he's the best option in LF right now. Also, I don't think he should be batting leadoff, but he is fine for a 7 hole hitter.

Anyone know what Sappelt's glove is like?? Is he capable of playing LF??

I agree...but you can't settle for that. If he's not producing like you would want your LF to, you have to go out and get one that will. You can't just settle for him just because he's your best option on the team.

Completely agree w/ that. There just doesn't seem to be much out there. Louisville might be the best option to find that player.
