Your chick friend is wrong, for the most part.
The central theme of all the books has continued to be vampires, especially Sookie's relationships -- first to Bill, then with Eric.
As noted, Lafayette didn't survive book one, and the witches came along later after Katrinia, but played a crucial role in some of the blood letting that happened between supernatural groups.
The fae is much more interesting in the books in that it explains how Sookie came to be, the attraction to vampires, and the in-fighting between fae sects (they're brutal) that led to the death of Sookie's parents. It isn't a dominating storyline, but it has some key moments.
The books are much better than the HBO series has been, for the most part.
The last part of last season was great -- and if they keep following that line, the show would be better.
Finally, Tara is NOTHING like she is in the books, where she's more of a minor character. Also, the Vampire hierarchy with its kings and queens in much better defined in the books -- and Bill is not royalty.
