Just out of curiosity, Do you really think Michigan would have beat OSU at all in the past 3 years if Pryor never played in any of those games? I don't.

If Pryor goes to Oregon or an SEC school, no one even knows about free tattoos let alone the 6 figure bonus a recruit of his stature goes for down there. At Ohio State, they have the NCAA on the phone whenever someone takes a shit, so you can't get away with recruiting the same type of players.

How is this that different?

Scenario 1: Come to "State U" and we'll give you "X" dollars.

Scenario 2: Come to "State U" and you can sell your State U provided stuff for "X" dollars.

Its a stupid violation, whether X is a lot of money or (perhaps, even worse) not much money.

I have no idea where the compliance department was on this, the very first thing you are told as a student athlete is that you can't do exactly what these guys were doing. It certainly creates an unfair advantage for schools willing to allow this to happen. The argument (if one can call it that) that these guys were just selling "their stuff" is a maguffin, a smokescreen, they were taking money for being student athletes, the ONE thing you can't do to maintain eligibility.

Back to the thread, Tressel should resign. He's going to be out in 1 or 2 years anyway, let Fickell show what he can do and the program can move on.

I honestly doubt they will hire Fickell...

I would be willing to bet they hire someone who has no connection to Tressel

How is this that different?

I had this discussion with my brother in law the other day. He compared tattoo gate with the $180K allegedly offered to Cam Newton as justification for the Buckeye saga to be much ado about nothing. I explained the only difference between the two was that Cam's father negotiated a better deal.

I agree Tress should and will resign very soon (I am guessing after the 2011 season).

Those blaming Pryor are just using an easy excuse.

Tressel blatantly covered this up AND lied about it.

If Tressel is the coach next year I will have a really hard time rooting for him.

As much as i love Tress...

He screwed up, big time, and should resign right away, IMO. Nothing else to be done, really. Can't salvage anything, at this point. Best for all parties involved if he just leaves, let the program move on and try to put this behind them.

Why can't the program put this behind them with Tressel still the coach?

He didn't rob an old lady...he made a mistake. No need to fire the guy, or want him fired.

Agreed, on PTI they said that 13 other coaches have committed a 10.1 violation and all were fired except one and that was Bruce Pearl who was fired not long after.

I think OSU should act soon though. Either come out and say he is our guy and will be regardless of what is to come in may or let him go now.

Obviously Tressel was belovedvin Columbus and when the news broke it would have been hard to fire him in fear of the public backlash.

But at this point I think the fan base is split so it might be considered.

I don't see him getting fired but I am sure he will step down if the school basically makes him.

They should fire Tressel, take away 85 scholarships for the next 100 years, and we'll still be better than Notre Dame and Michigan.

And they will still hate.

Yeah, that's not true.

Maybe in your mind OSU is a joke if they keep him...I do realize how you sometimes (most of the time) get confused and think just because it runs through your head, it reflects the general public's opinions as well.

Yes, some people will be upset with Tressel, but this is college football now. It's a huge moneymaker, there is going to be some corruption. Get over it.

I don't know about that. If he thought so highly of the program he would have come forward from the get-go instead of jeopardizing much more than one season. We could be talking about setting OSU back several seasons now if schollies get reduced and bowl bans.

I don't get the tolerance for corruption, and particularly don't get the hypocrisy.

If this happened at LSU or Arkansas, there would be 20 threads about how the coach is dirty, the program should hang, the wins should be vacated, etc.

It is unfortunate what happened, no need to dwell on it but there is a need to look forward. Tressel was an unbelievable coach and served the program well. But there are consequences to actions, the consequence in this case is at best what the NCAA has already dealt, at worse....well, it can be a lot worse. But there is no rationalization about this, there were violations.
