If you're going to live in a place where people might actually care (right or wrong) what you say, it probably isn't a bad idea to pick sides.
Some examples for you narrow minded assholes.
New York: (Mets or Yankees)
New York: (Giants or Jets)
Los Angeles: (Lakers or Clippers)
Austin, TX (Houston or Dallas)
Any city in the middle of Florida (Orlando or Miami)
Bay Area (San Francisco or Oakland).
I'm not saying anybody has to choose sides, and I'm not even saying that I would (continue on assuming raw dawg, but when I attend law school in Arizona I won't be "cheering" on the Cardinals), but I'm providing a logical justification for why someone would to a person who is so dumb they can't comprehend why (CoA).
So essentially be fake, and pretend you like a team in order to "fit in." Sorry, not every person in the world is like rock and capone, where their lives depend on a specific city's professional teams. If you don't cheer for their team, or even if you dislike their team, they are not going to hate you. If they do, they are pretty pathetic and you shouldn't really worry about "fitting in" with a crowd like that. If you want to relate with them, discuss topics they are interested (i.e. sports) and display you have a knowledge for them. They are more likely respect you for that, and respect you for showing loyalty and pride in your own team, as oppose to "cheering" for their team. As long as you are not an asshole, you will "fit in."

So you had this convo with your friends and they said "lhslep, you know how you fit in these big cities? All you have to do is be fake, and pretend you like the teams they support. Then you will fit in!"
Give me a break. Cities like that have high populations, so chances are you are going to find a group of people who share your common interests. There is no need to be fake about it.
