Yeah, out of the last 13 champions, 9 have won their conference tournament that same season:

2010: Duke (Won ACC Tournament)
2009: North Carolina (Lost in conference tourney)
2008: Kansas (Won Big XII Tournament)
2007: Florida (Won SEC Tournament)
2006: Florida (Won SEC Tournament)
2005: North Carolina (Lost in conference tourney)
2004: UConn (Won Big East Tournament)
2003: Syracuse (Lost in Big East tourney)
2002: Maryland (Lost in ACC tourney)
2001: Duke (Won ACC Tournament)
2000: Michigan State (Won Big 10 Tournament)
1999: UConn (Won Big East Tournament)

Not sure I buy into there being some kind of correlation that you need to win your conf. tourney to win the NCAA. Fact of the matter is, these teams were all just very good teams, best in their conference. So no, I don't think its a must to win the conference. I also wonder how many teams who have gone on to win the NCAA, won the regular season conference titles??
What it does say though, is what some argue about teams/players being "tired" going into the NCAA. The above totally throws that theory out the window.

damn, you don't realize how few B10 titles have been won lately until you see a list like that. So many 2nd place finishes lately, OSU or Purdue need to finish the job this year. When was the last one before MSU, must have been Michigan or Indiana?

1998....Kentucky....Yes(reg season), won both
1999....UConn....Yes, won both
2000....Sparty....NO...OSU won the reg. season
2001....Duke....NO...Carolina won the reg. season
2002....Maryland....Yes, lost in conf. Semis
2003....Cuse....Yes, tied with Pitt
2004....UConn....NO...Pitt won the reg. season
2005....UNC....Yes, lost in conf. semis
2006....Florida....NO, Tenn. won reg. season
2007....Florida....Yes, won both
2008....Kansas....Yes, tied with Texas
2009....UNC....Yes, lost in conf. semis
2010....Dook....Yes, tied with Maryland, won both

So, 9/13 teams won the reg. season title.

There have been 10...
Men's Basketball (10)
Year School
1932 Purdue †
1940 Indiana
1941 Wisconsin
1953 Indiana
1960 Ohio State
1976 Indiana
1979 Michigan State
1981 Indiana
1987 Indiana
1989 Michigan
2000 Michigan State

† Helms Athletic Foundation National Champion, not NCAA. In 1936 the Helms Athletic Foundation was formed and retroactively compiled a list of college basketball champions for the previous 35 years. For 10 of the years that followed the formation of the Western Conference (the Big Ten's original name), a Big Ten team was selected: 1907-09, 1912, 1914-16, 1919, 1931-32. Indiana's 1940 NCAA championship was not recognized by Helms, which selected USC instead. Chicago's 1908 national title was won in a championship series against the University of Pennsylvania.
Well, 9.

I might be making the trip with a few buddies but I'm struggling with the idea of not being able to watch the rest of Championship Week. They are leaving Thursday night and plan to just scalp tickets once they get there. I think that would be the cheapest way to go about getting tickets.

Thursday, March 10 - First Round

Northwestern (8) vs. Minnesota (9) @ 2:30
Penn St. (7) vs. Iowa (10) @ approx. 5:00
Michigan St (6) vs. Indiana (11) @ 7:30

Friday, March 11 - Quarterfinals
Game 1 >Ohio St. (1) vs. Northwestern/Minnesota winner @ high noon
Game 2 >Illinois (4) vs. Michigan (5) @ approx. 2:30
Game 3 >Purdue (2) vs. Penn St./Iowa winner @ 6:30
Game 4 >Wisconsin (3) vs. Mich. St./Indiana winner @ approx. 8:00

Saturday, March 12 - Semifinals
Winner of 1st Quarterfinal game vs. winner of second quarterfinal game from Friday @ 1:40 p.m.
Winner of 3rd quartfinal game vs. winner of fourth quarterfinal game from Friday @ approx 3:10 p.m.

Sunday, March 13 - Championship @ 3:30 p.m.

Expect a couple of teams to be playing for a bid to the dance while others are playing for a more favorable seed or tourney games closer to home.

This is a big cash cow so I understand why it's being done but not putting too much stock in the outcome so far as the Buckeyes are concerned. Just hope to get everyone out of this with no injuries.

This Minny and Northwestern game is painful to watch.

I like the B1G at the foul line though, I will give Delany and his retarded creation that at least.

I'd think they'd have to win the conference title. 7-11 conference record, no quality OOC wins and an 0-7 mark against in-conference ranked teams (at the time they played them)...one big tournament win won't overcome that.
