What's the rule on this? We've started doing this more now that we have the little C-Monster who prevents us from going to restaurants. Should we tip? If so, what is expected?

No. I didn't get any service (which is what tips are for), why should I tip?

This. All they did was box it up. My dog could do that.

I don't. When I tip at a restaurant it is for the service that the server provides. There isn't much involved in handing me a bag of food.

Are there any restaurant people on this site who can weigh in? I agree with the sentiments above that a tip seems unnecessary, but I also don't want to be put on a bad list and get crap done to my food because I don't tip. I mean, we order take-out from the same handful of restaurants at least once a week, so if it's an issue, I'd rather pay the $5 protection money than have to deal with stuff in my food.

But if it's not customary and there are no drawbacks, then I don't really want to tip because there has been no service.

I dont tip for carry-out. I do tip the delivery drivers if you have something delivered. (As most of you do, I'm sure)

let's put it this way, servers make around 3-4 an hour because their job is tip based. Carry out makes the standard 7 or 8 per hour. If you want to tip carry out go right ahead, but it's not expected.

Where I work, once in a while, someone will tip on carry-out. Sometimes they'll tell me (manager) to keep it because their food is ready on time/looks good/smells good. Once in a while, they'll ask me to give it to the person that made it. Once in a while, they'll tip me and whoever made it. It's very rare for anyone to tip on carry-out where I'm at.

the person goes in the back and bags up your food, makes sure you have bread/butter, silverware...ect and makes sure your order is correct so i usually give them a tip. also they usually share this with cooks/hostesses and such on tip outs im assuming from hearing stories from friends in the industry

If you're going to define a service that loosely you should be tipping people for almost everything.

I'm not a fan of the liberal usage of tip in our society. I have nothing against tipping at restaurants when the service is good. But I think too many people just expect tips with bad service... or just expect tips for minimal service. And when people expect tips they aren't going to work for it and won't get good tips.

I tip the waiter/waitress because we are interacting for over relatively long period of time. Someone who is giving me food that I am picking up is not putting in the same time commitment and personal connection that requires a tip.

Sorry, but taking 1 minute to check the order and give it to me does not equal enough time or actual personal service to deserve a tip.

If I can't actually determine how well they did their job because of the brevity of the situation, then the situation clearly doesn't require a tip. If I don't have any kind of interaction with them for longer than 2 minutes than it doesn't merit a tip.

That's just my feelings.

I rarely ever tip. If I do, it is when the server is really nice, but then I only give like 2 bucks. Im a broke, unemployed college student.

If you're broke you can't afford to eat out at a restaurant. If you can afford to eat at a restaurant, you can afford to tip.

Boo! You give college students a bad name. I hated going to restaurants with a group of friends in college because we were almost always the servers last priority. They just assumed we would tip badly so they took care of everyone else before us. Sucks for them because 2 of my roommates were servers and we all tipped very well because we knew how hard they worked and for how little.

college kids and old people tend to tip the least is what my wife tells me.

I do not tip for carry out at all. I typically tip pretty good when I go out but not for carry out.....no way.

gotta use my dining dollars up somehow haha. Akron has a plan where A LOT of restaurants accept the zipcard as payment. Plus I usually go out to eat with a group of friends and the restaurants usually charge gratuity.

I thought that was their job,do you tip the cashier at walmart because she rang your purchase up correctly and bagged it properly?

I am not trying to be a smart ass about this but you have to draw the line or everyone will expect tips for doing their job correctly.

I am talking about take out. When eating at a restaurant or delivery I always tip.

Typically, no. There is a local pizza/sub place I order from pretty often that I do occasionally put a dollar or two into the tip jar. That's mainly because I'm a semi-regular ordering there and they do a good job with my food, so it's kinda like a "good job; keep it up, guys!" sort of thing.
