I am not trying to be a smart ass about this but you have to draw the line or everyone will expect tips for doing their job correctly.

isnt serving people the server's job? I know their pay is mostly based on tips and their wage is like 3-4 dollars an hour, but I have some friends who serve at places like outback and red lobster and bring home 200-300 dollars a week. Thats pretty good for taking peoples orders if you ask me, especially when I make 300 a week during the summer working my ass off in the heat doing road construction.

I tip at restuarants because the waitress is bringing my food, filling up my drinks, multiple trips to see if we need anything, and then someone cleans up after us.

That is is why I tip.

Is that their job? Yeah..so why tip for them doing their job? Good question..probably because we know that is how their earn their living I guess!

For a long while i was going to subway 5-7 times a week. I would tip a dollar here and there for them when I saw a new employee working. It really did make them seem a bit mor friendly and piling on the toppings for me...and sometimes even upping the drink size for free!

When people know you tip well you will get better service....there is no doubt

I've never even thought about tipping for take out. I might now that you mentioned it. I delivered pizza when I was in college so I know how much it can make someone's day to get a few dollars in tips.

To the above poster who talked about old people not tipping well. My experience was as follows:

College and below - very small if any tip.
Just out of college (~23-25) - Best tippers
30-50 yo - 10-15%
50+ - $2. no matter what the total. $2

Never tip for carry-out, I can see if you're in Heretic's boat that you might be securing future good service, but I don't patronize any one place that often.

On the subject though, I don't like having my gratuity dictated (what is it 18%?), nor included on my receipt. It's up to my discretion what my "gratuity" is.

Few of my friends tell me that most of the old people will tip one dollar....plus whatever change they have back as well.

Yeah...for me, I live in a more small-town area, where the choices are VERY limited. Basically Domino's, Pizza Hut and the local place. Local place is the best, so they get most of my service (Domino's gets the late-night "too drunk to want to drive; starving; they deliver" vote).

I don't.

Although the other day, I went to a sushi restaurant and wanted take out. The server was very kind and friendly to me, and I felt he deserved a signal of my gratitude. I gave him a $1.

Heretic;664806 wrote:Typically, no. There is a local pizza/sub place I order from pretty often that I do occasionally put a dollar or two into the tip jar. That's mainly because I'm a semi-regular ordering there and they do a good job with my food, so it's kinda like a "good job; keep it up, guys!" sort of thing.

this. . .i dont do it everytime but i go there a decent amount and they have a baby and the wife is pregs again (family owned small chinese takeout place)

I would say to tip carry out a few bucks if you are picking up a large order. If it's something small then no its not worth it cuz they do make $8 an hour and thats just doing their job. But please tip your servers making $3 isn't enough for shit and trust me their doing a hell of a lot more work than carryout.

No. Waiters don't live off of tips either. Restaurants are required under federal law to make up any difference in the minimum wage if the person doesn't make enough in tips to cover it. So, someone stiffing a waiter isn't going to cost him anything.

I tip when I'm picking up Chinese, only because I'm afraid they will say nasty things about me if I don't, and I would never know.

Then why would you care? :P That's what I figure they are always talking about when I go to a Chinese place. Making fun of all the fat Americans stuffing their faces with the crap they wouldn't eat if you paid them.

My fiancé and I tip for carry out and delivery. Always give them 3 or 4 bucks for carry out and usually around 7 bucks for delivery. At a restaurant we start at 20% if they are good it will stay at 20% if my drink sits empty for a period of time or anything else they lose out on the 20%. If they are very good we will add some to the 20%.

I agree with this.

But in your case FFT I would probably tip 5 bucks since you order from them often.

I mean, we order take-out from the same handful of restaurants at least once a week, so if it's an issue, I'd rather pay the $5 protection money than have to deal with stuff in my food.

It's a shame this is the reality of the situation.

I look at carry-out like your mailman. You shouldn't have to tip them, but if you frequent the place enough, and they know you by name, then you probably should just to keep in thier good graces...nothing fancy, like $10 a week or something. Just like your mailman, you don't need to tip, hell it may be illegal, i don't know...but around XMas I always leave a thank you card and $20 in the box for them...just to say thanks for not screwing up my mail too much. That little amount of money goes along way in terms of special treatment/service.

Only at a Greek restaurant in Mansfield that I frequent. Never had a bad meal, great service, and once gave me a free gyro for the hell of it. Plus $2 on pickups

You know for fact that by tipping your mailman $20 annually is getting you special treatment?

Yes, when he delivers to my door in the snow instead of leaving it in the box...i think that's pretty good service. Hell, just today he brought it around to the side of the house to hand it to me personally while I had the dog out. Does he do that for everyone, maybe. But I like to believe that my thank you card (and who cares about the money, but yeah the $20) helps a little. Everyone likes to be recognized for their job.

Yep, a full twelver on top of the garbage cans with a note has benefited me more than once.

I also go by the no tip for carry out rule. And people are exactly correct - you tip a server because it's an expected part of their wages.

Interestingly enough, I get IHOP carry out on occasion and the host/hostess brings me my food. But actually, how much effort is it beside my coffee? I never tip, but I probably should leave a $1 for that since they do put the condiments and utentsils in there, they do a bit more than just grab everything.

The whole "tip" thing is getting carried away. Seems like everyone wants a tip these days.

I don't tip for carry-out - it's not the same as a waiter/waitress serving your meal.

Your in-house service is getting paid much less than minimum wage, whereas the counter attendant is usually getting paid full wages. When Darby Diva was slinging hash, the place where she would work would occasionally have a server handle the take-out station when things were moderately slow - when this happened, the hours were kept separate and she would get full wage for that amount of time.
