[edit]BUT....since 92....Bears 8...Smithies 8

Rest assured that I'm aware that we shared it several of those years. Until (and even a little after) the 2002 season, the Smithies had a pretty substantial 9-1 monkey on their back. They rarely lost to the same team twice in that stretch, but it was always someone.

1998: 9-1 (Lost to Waynedale)
1999: 9-1 (Lost to Chippewa)
2000: 9-1 (Lost to Loudonville)
2001: 9-1 (Lost to Northwestern)
2002: 10-0
2003: 9-1 (Lost to Dalton)
2004: 9-1 (Lost to Manchester)
2005: 9-1 (Lost to Hillsdale)
2006: 9-1 (Lost to Northwestern)

After that, we have hit a few speed bumps, but it was damn-near a curse to go that long and do that well with only one undefeated season. Even before those teams, the Smithies were 8-2, 7-3, 7-3, 8-2, and 7-3. That's from 1993 to 2006 ... quite a stretch indeed.

I miss the Smithville/Dalton/Waynedale rivalries for the league championship each year. We need to get back to that. :D

Given the circumstances SINCE then, I'm starting to miss having that problem. :D

I skipped the Riders game last night to go see the Bobcats with a buddy of mine. I'm not sure what CVCA is supposed to have but Norwayne administered a total beating on them. The Wallace kid threw for 300 plus in less than 3 qtrs. They rushed for over 300 yards last week. It's as if they were practicing against CVCA. It seemed like they played 35 kids last night. This game could have been much worse. Half of the yards in the air went to #2. I dont know who he is but he made a couple big time catches. He also had a 72 yard TD blowing by the corner like he was standing still. They have a few nice sized kids at reciever...probabaly 6'1" - 6'3". I didnt see much out of the running game but again it didnt seem like they were working on it. The Zimmerly bros didnt do much carrying the ball. Wallace had a couple nice TD runs set up by the success of the passing game. The defense was solid and they rotated alot of kids. I'm definitely impressed. These guys look as good as advertised.

The crowds at Smithville have fallen off over the last few years. The community got really spoiled during the the "Glory Days". I remember a time when you had to get to the stands at least an hour before kick off or you would be standing! I think it is the same at most WCAL schools, I remember going games at Hillsdale, Norwayne and Northwestern and seeing the home stand less than half full, but Its a different story now. Smithville has not had a great season since 06. The crowds will be back but right now I think they are a little cautious.

They've got a NICE stable or RBs back there! Doesn't surprise me at all that they are running so well.
Mr Miyagi;881529 wrote:Miyagi also was surprised by the low numbers on the team............Miyagi also thought that the Smithville crowd would be bigger...... What's up with having an auction at halftime that no one is bidding on ???????
Team has shrunk over the last few years, as has the band and crowds. That's the way it goes when teams have a lull, unfortunately.

GoFalcons....
Hillsdale looked very impressive on TV last night. Big Off & Def lines....Multiple workhorse backs....tall talented wideout....lots of players. If the Falcons hadn't had so many decades of misery, I'd call you guys spoiled. Hillsdale looks primed for another title run.

Bucyrus was a nice pickup.....they'll win some games this year......Now, who to replace Mapleton?......Manchester?, Fredricktown?....hell, anyone will be a major upgrade.

Hillsdale/Norwayne is shaping up to be the Must See game everyone was predicting back in July.

Bucyrus is young and very likely to finish last in their division of the NCC. If they can win 5 games overall, I'll be surprised.

I still say they were a good pickup. The Bucyrus team I saw on TV played with a lot of spirit.....Hillsdale had a game on their hands. It wasn't exactly the "name the score" game you (and I..and alot of others) predicted.

If they are young this year.....next year should be another good game.

I'd love to see this. I'm hesitant to assert a claim like that, only because recent years have been rough, but I hope they go 9-1 and make the playoffs!

Wasn't impressed with the Indians...Fell behind big early and made some strides in the 2nd half. Coach Dennis actually ran the ball and it worked. If he can venture more away from the spread the team will improve. Bryce Bauman (brother of Brandon) ran the ball pretty well for only being a sophomore. Can't wait till friday at Mapleton. Hopefully we can pull out a W

Rittman ran the ball? That reinforces my point earlier in the week not only about running out of the spread but also that kid who didn't play because he felt there was no place on the team for him was misinformed.

The League is now 6 & 10.
Chippewa (0-2) @ Columbia (1-1)
Dalton (0-2) @ Timkin (2-0)
Smithville (1-1) hosts Fairless (1-1)
Waynedale (1-1) hosts Triway (0-2)
Northwestern (0-2) @ Mogadore (1-1)
Rittman (0-2) @ Mapleton (0-2)
Norwayne (2-0) @ Western Reserve (1-1)
Hillsdale (2-0) hosts Loudonville (0-2)

Will we be over .500 for week three?

This could be our best week,
Hillsdale & Norwayne should win
After seeing them play, I'm liking Smithvilles chances
Rittman & Waynedale both could claim victories.....kind of tossup games IMO
Maybe Dalton has a shot against Timken, but probably not
The Chipps and Huskies will get handled.

If the stars align, 6-2.
If the wheels fall off, 2-6.
the probable result, 3-5
My glass half full prediction........................4-4

Since were talking "out of conference", here's a little history--
Since 2002 the WCAL is 126-106 in these contests
2011....6-10
2010...10-14
2009...13-11
2008...13-11
2007...13-11
2006...17-7
2005...17-7
2004....9-15
2003...14-10
2002...14-10

Team by Team breakdown 2002-2011(thru 2 weeks)
Hillsdale & Norwayne..............19-10
Smithville & Dalton.................18-11
Waynedale & Northwestern......17-12
Rittman.................................11-18
Chippewa................................7-22

Whats all this mean?, you ask
Answer-I have too much time on my hands

Note: I DO NOT stand behind my statistics. In the past, mistakes have been made.

not to negative, but Tuslaws defense is terrible. It was nice to score and see some offense out of the Dogs but we are in for a long season which we all know because of our youth. Timken will be looking for pay back this year, I just hope we can keep it close.
I said before the season started we would go 5-5, but I'm thinking 3-7 or 4-6 will be our record.

we all knew it would be a struggle this season, if we can show improvment as the season goes on - that's really what we are looking for. It sounds like that was the case, so that's a positive.

I think the Dogs have a shot at beating Timken. Its really hard to say how good Timken is because their wins weren't against great teams. I know we are young but we made great strides in just one week if we can keep that up we may surprise a team or two.
