The silence over the recent price run-up is yet the latest example of left-wing hypocrisy. It was always about bludgeoning Bush rather than a sincere conviction that Big Oil was cheating. How else to explain the absence of demands for investigations?
Elders is right on target.

How much in taxes is government making off of gas per gallon?

Seems to me that they make a pretty good profit off of something they are not manufacturing by the sweat of their own collective brows.

To hell with what the oil companies are making in profit, it's their business to produce oil. They are allowed to make a profit off of their work - take a look at what the government is taking (or rather, making) lol

The government make the same , no matter what the price. It is taxed per gallon.

As for what the government is making, I would say nothing. The government could't turn a profit pimpin hoes inside a prison.

I mean, come on, Louie! LOL
Go on just about any thread since November 2008 and see how many gloom and doom predictions have been made by many on this site. By their accounts, we should be in the bread line right now, selling apples and pencils. It hasn't happened yet, but I imagine that the dour predictions of this will continue until at least November 2012, if not beyond.

Federal and state taxes combined are approximately 50 cents per gallon. While it is true that the taxes remain relatively constant regardless of oil prices, the fact remains that the percentage of taxes to each gallon is IMHO a bit over-the-top. At $3 per gallon that means taxes per gallon equate to about 16%.

I can almost understand charging standard state sales tax per gallon at roughly 6%. But 16% combined state and federal?

Yes, yes, yes the taxes allegedly go towards infrastructure maintenance but...16%?

Will the OC tax experts explain how this works?

That's because the Liberal Dems would want to subsidize all the prisoners that can't afford the hoes. Call it the "No Dick Left Behind Act".
