We get 25 paid days off a year. Sick days, vacation days, etc are all part of that bucket.
I typically use most of those as planned vacation days each year. I keep a few until near the end of the year, in case I get sick (very rare). This year I'll have 3 days that will roll forward into next year.
I've never understood not using most days of vacation time, to me it's part of my overall compensation, and I'm taking it without feeling bad about it. I do check emails, and receive phone calls occasionally when on vacation, but that's just the nature of my job.

I like having all paid days off combined into one bucket, in previous companies when there were a specific number of sick days available, I only used them when I was actually sick. I'd have trouble calling in and pretending to be sick...

Because you just can't SEE coming into work.

I'd pay for a sick day. I think I wake up every morning wanting to call off but can't do that in the military.

I have personal days I can use if I'm sick. I haven't called off work since 2005. I did miss 2 weeks to have my collar bone pieced back together last year, but have never called off for feeling sick. I guess it goes back to my Military days where it was harder to get off work than to just go into work. I hated early morning sick call because I worked mostly second shift. (still work second shift)

If I call in sick, much of the year, I have to take the call... lol.

I knew a buddy who called off one day and his employer's response was "You better f'ing be in the hospital!"
