My daughter is going to be starting preschool next week, so my fiance and I had to go with all the other parents yesterday to parent/teacher conference. Basically just introducing us to the staff, telling a bit of history, but the part that really caught my attention were the policies.

This is a peanut or nut substance free school due to kids that might have allergies. Anything containing any form of nuts or substance is not allowed in school. I don't ever remember hearing stuff like this when I was in school, I took pb&j sandwiches often for lunch, now every kid had a peanut allergy.

Any field trips are scheduled on the weekends. One reason is it would be hard with all the car seats if there aren't many drivers which I understand. But they also said if a kid were to ride with another parent, the kids parents have to approve of the person they are riding with, and the school does a check to make sure the drivers are insured. When I was in grade school, (it wasn't THAT long ago), we were sent home with a permission slip for our parents to sign, asking if they could drive, and that was it.

There are some other odd things but nothing huge. It's a very good school and glad she is going there, but I just realized how times are changing.

Trying to protect against any potential lawsuits IMO are the main reason we see so many stupid ass changes.

It started changing in the late sixties early seventies, when all the touchy feely people, no not priests, (hippies) started to convince the powers that be that there should be no winners and losers, we should be concerned about your feelings not your academic abilities, and God forbid you have to work for an A. Then the lawyers caught up to it and like sharks smelling blood in the water started representing little Johnny because the little wuss bag threw his arm out playing dodge ball or hitting a volleyball off of a cone. Then the administators puckered up for fear of being sued. Pretty much a down hill slide from there.

PS My son has nut allergies, we send him to school with an epi-pen and tell him not to eat any nuts. He knows to look out for them and not eat anything he is unsure of. It is called being responsible. He has survived K-5th without an incident and we have not demanded that anyone else to stop bringing nuts to school because my wife and I are not jackasses.

A lot of schools are pushing non-peanut tables etc... It's a BIG food allergy. It's not like being allergic to a cat.

Modern medicine and Krogers is to blame. Too many people surviving to adulthood instead of dying in the wilderness of hunger and disease.

We now have to protect all the weak, all the illegals, all the criminals, all the terrorists. We too have to be poor and weak like them, or they will make us poor to say we are helping them. We now can be sued for anything. Everyone is allergic to everything now, we can't eat and drink as we wish because too many people are fat. We can't say how we feel or what we believe in because someone may get offended but its okay if the smaller groups tell the majority how they feel now and what they believe. I could go on and on you get my point.....

I'm going to remind everyone here, mods included, keep the political rhetoric out of the serious business forum or the topic will find its way over there shortly. And I doubt it'll be approved as a legitimate topic over there.

I think this honestly is a conversation for politics. Politics really dictate where the schools go and how they conduct business anyway right? I think using politics as a legit answer to the question posed by the OP is really a just answer.

Speaking of that, when we pack her lunch she is required to have a certain number of things from each food group.

"Required"?
I think all of us see the point, but that seems a little odd.

Do they physically check her lunch contents before she eats?

Well I doubt she is going to get thrown out of school if she doesn't bring 1 dairy, veggie, and fruit item to school everyday, but in the packet we received it told us the items that should be packed in lunches. (Except peanuts of course, lol)

Kids that suffer that peanut allergy can actually die pretty quickly from it if they have severe cases. It's really nothing to mess around with.

Rather than blame the evil lawyers, why not blame the stupid parents who rush to sue? The "me-first" boomers and Gen-Xers have created a cult of egotism that they must defend by suing anyone who dares infringe upon it. Blaming the lawyers (or the teachers, or the unions, or whomever else) is just an extension of this lack of personal responsibility.
