Also, Private schools can allow kids from ANY district to go to their school. Open enrollment is usually limited to only bordering districts.
The main advantage private schools have over public schools in sports is not about the kids they do have, it’s about the kids they don't have. I attended both public and private schools and the major difference was the public school had a large number of kids who did NOTHING. They didn't play sports, didn't do band, choir, etc. they simply bloated the enrollment number. The public schools still have to take them which means they are just not going to produce the same quality sports teams per capita that private schools do.
Before a private school advocate tells me that private schools do not turn down students who are willing to pay, I totally agree with that. However, these kids are almost always low income kids with parents who are not involved so they would never end up a private school anyways. High school sports with the exception of D1 is about having the most talented team with the smallest number of kids, and private schools by their nature are set up to do that better than publics.
