Dude you gotta remember Princess Di was loved by a whole heck of a lot more people than MJ. MJ had a ton of people who were probably glad he died....

You are so fucking stupid that it's not even funny.

We'll see if that statement is true when he has the highest selling CD and Video Game of 2010 in a two-month time period

I'd like to agree that Michael Jacksons death is nowhere near important as the other events listed, but I'm afriad gibby would slap me in the mouth when he saw me like he promised so I'll refrain from voting.

Was MJ's death a huge event? Absolutely. Was it a generation's signature moment? No way. Many megastars have died tragic deaths (see: Elvis, Jim Morrison, Janice Joplan, Curt Kobain, Richie Valens, Buddy Holly), and none I would consider a signature event of their generation ...

I will say the OJ case and subsequent media coverage changed media coverage of high profile cases. Consider, without OJ there would likely be no Court TV (now called TruTV) and shows like Nancy Grace would be non-exisitant. People spent the whole day watching the Ford Bronco chase and later would watch the trial on TV as well. The media quickly realized it had a new cottage industry on their hands.

Regarding the Princess Di/MJ deaths, if I recall Princess Di died on a Sunday. I remember watching a football game when I heard the news. I did a quick Google search and confirmed the date. Also, over a million people lined a four mile route from Kensington Palace to Westminster Abbey. Crowds of people watched and lisented to the funeral proceedings on giant outdoor screens . Following her death, the suicide attempt rate increased by 44% in England and Wales. One final aspect of Princess Di's death which hightened it was the role of the Paparazzi. If you recall, many blamed the car accident on the Paparazzi. A subsequent jury found the Paparazzi and the limo driver were neglgient and the proximate cause of the accident.

Fair point, and I'd throw Cobain in the group of being unexpected. MJ's death wasn't unexpected, he was in bad health for a while, he had two great albums in the U.S. and obviously had a following for his concerts, but his persona overshadowed his music. John Cash was far more talented and influential.
