Ok I think we can all agree now that Gibby trolls.

Princess Diana's death was more of a turn stopper no doubt. She was an Icon of mercy, goodwill, victims and children.
Not to mention that she was the face of England for a good number years, overshadowing Queen Elizabeth.

MJ was only a pop icon.

Gibby, you're outscored here, sorry.

Just a tiny example: In the early 80's, Princess Diana got married and that wedding was televised and watched by almost 1 BILLION people internationally.
That was just her wedding. That doesn't say anything about all her tireless charity work, hospital building, etc.

Gibby is a moron and a troll. He should just be neglected.

Princess Di is a good one, although I was only seven or eight at the time of her death and didn't really know anything about her.

Like someone else said, I consider a defining moment as something that I can remember instantly what I was doing when it happened. I was born in 86, so bear with me.

A. Berlin Wall fell in 1989-I was 3. Don't remember it, so I can't include it for myself, however, it tops the list.
In no particular order

1.OJ Trial-I was in 4th Grade helping out the secretary in the office. The tv was on, and the principal, secretary, and 2 play ground aids were eating their lunch watching the verdict. I went back to the class, and the teacher let me interrupt class and make the announcement. Later, the secretary came on and said "Staff and Students, Not Guilty." I went home and my older cousin (In High School) said that the every class room had the feed on their tvs watching. Kind of dumb, but it took the country over.

2. Princess Diana's Death-Getting ready for church Sunday Morning. I woke up at 4am later in the week to watch the funeral. "Candle In the Wind" that's all I'm saying.

3. Death of Pope John Paul II-Just came back from class Freshmen Year in college. Everyone was watching in my dorm room because I had the biggest tv

4.Columbine Shooting- 8th Grade was getting ready to start. The entire scope of school security changed after that. Nothing like this had ever happened before. Now, you see the weird kid walking down the hall with a trench coat and think "When is the day he's gonna do it?" For me this had the biggest impact because school completely changed. Doors were locked during the day, and you had Lock Down Drills.....

5. Obama's win-Not going to say anything; it just happened 2 years ago.

I gave 2 people that have died during my life and neither one was Michael Jackson. I can remember Princess Diana in 97 and the Pope in 05, but not the day Jackson died in 09. Also, put Mother Theresa before him as well. How bout Tupac in 96? Hell, I can remember that better than MJ

Also, just to throw these out there. They may be more for people in the area, but what about the L.A. Riots and Cincinnati Riot?

WTF did Princess Di do for anyone? ...and don't give me that humanitarian BS...the woman was simply a member of the lucky sperm club and married into the Royal family because she had some "royal blood" in her lineage. Maybe this should be a whole new thread..."Should Britain Finally Join the Modern Era and Get Rid of the Royals?" The whole bunch of 'em are in-bred assholes sucking off the working man Brit's tit.

Well, I have to rock the boat and say that if 9/11 never happened, then EVERYTHING that occurred after that could potentially be different. That single event changed the course of history. Who's to say that Obama is even elected if 9/11 never happened? I agree that without 9/11 (and probably even with it) the fall of communism is without question the most sweeping, world changing event of the past 30 years.

As to how to rate the various other low/highlights of that era, everyone is going to have their own opinion of the individual significance - mostly based on your age and how significant it was to you. For example, Michael Jackson's death was extremely significant to Gibby. Now for me, while I will certainly remember that it happened, years down the road I won't know what day or probably even what year. Not to mention, his death was the result (like Elvis) of long term drug abuse. Princess Diana, on the other hand, was devastating to me in the sheer tragedy of it. This generous, vibrant, beautiful woman and mother just instantly gone. Her loss had a huge impact to people all over the world.

Obviously, we need to agree to disagree on the ratings, but great topic for discussion.

Zambrown, great post, and nice to see this thread spark some interesting debate. A few others came to mind (but none bigger than those already mentioned):

*The LA riots/Rodney King
*Release of Nelson Mandela
*Waco tragedy/David Koresh
*Rwanda Genocide
*Atlanta Olympics bombing

None of these were the "signature" moment, but they all were memorable in their own way for sure ...

Of those mentioned, depending how you define "moment," I think the emergence of the internet, the OJ trial, Princess Diana's death, the Challenger explosion and the election of Obama reign supreme.

Not true. I know 9-11 was a Tuesday, I know Diana died on a Saturday/Sunday, Columbine was a Tuesday, etc. I know MJ died mid-week but I dont even know which day it was. I am an MJ fan, and was only 11 when Diana died. She was much bigger worldwide as far as celebrity deaths go.
