What do you think the maximum heart rate (as in just crossed the finish line at state) be for an All-State runner? Should the heart rate be different for a middle of the pack district/regional runner?

How do you train a runner to be able to become more comfortable running with a higher heart rate?

Is seems this becomes one of the most important factors in the 3200m run.
After the mile, somewhere on the back stretch of the 5th mile, you see it.
That slight gap starts to form.

On occasion runners can push through it and stay with the pack with only determination. Other times runners just don't seem able/willing to change gears, as if they are stuck in a rhythm.

Coaches- If you can provide some examples of HR numbers, just for comparison sake, it would be wonderful.

I would hope all runners would be at least close to their maximum heart rate at the end of the race regardless with how good they are.

The only way to get used to racing at maximum heart rate is to run intervals as fast as it takes to achieve maximum heart rate. As the season goes on rest should be reduced. The pace doesn't necesarilly have to be faster.

Most of those things cause the heart to work harder to produce the same outcome (leg speed).

Most young runners will be running at or around 200 beats per minute toward the end of the race.
Thanks, I figured it was around 200 BPM. As for the running form and lactate clearance, I'd hope the coach could tell when a runner is just dogging it, or is really pushing too hard, and may need pulled early. As for ATP-PC regeneration, wouldn't this only really effect a distance runner if the practice was two (plus) hours?

My coach never did this.

It wouldn't have worked with the whole team apparently, because he didn't do it with any of them either :(

It took Graham quite a few years to finally learn how to race.

Pshh. We were fast enough anyways. I've got so many medals I don't know what to do with them all.

They make great targets when shooting a BB gun. A cool "pid-tiiiiiiiing" sound when shot.
