Inception won't make as much as Avatar (again, God that movie was stupid) or Revenge of the Sith, but it is a far superior film.
I can agree that Avatar was predictable, but that's not why it was as popular as it was. When people look back at the history of film as an art form, this is THE movie they will remember for kickstarting 3D in movies. Depending on how long the 3D thing lasts will ultimately depend on just how legendary Avatar is remembered. It's not like Cameron or Avatar invented the 3D experience, BUT in 10 years Avatar will be the only blockbuster movie remembered that used it in the early stages of 3D. Put it this way...it's like MJ introducing the world to the "moonwalk". Did he invent it? Hell no. Did he make it famous? Absolutely. Because he was the one that had enough star power to do it. "Avatar" is the same vehicle, just in different medium. It wasn't sold for it's plot. It was sold for it's originality, stunning detail in visual effects and it's availability in 3D. It's not exactly like Alien or Terminator 2 had an epic original or creative plots btw.
And I agree, Inception is twice the movie Avatar was in terms of plot and story detail. But Avatar was 10x's the movie of any other film you'll see this year (or probably for the next few years) in terms of visual effects and what I like to call "completeness"...meaning that it took 10 years to make, Cameron left no stone unturned and spared NO expense in order to make the film far above what most films can do in a 8-12 months of production/postproduction. It's apples to Oranges really.
