Now that the US is eliminated, the majority of people in the US are going to turn their attention to other sports whether it's baseball, NASCAR, the NBA free agency, whatever. You know that's true.

Right now is probably the weakest point of the year for sports. NFL offseason is dry, MLB is in the middle of the season (where the TV ratings are the lowest of the season), and NHL and NBA are over. Tthe World Cup is something that those people usually watch, whether or not USA is in it or not.

Most of your mainstream audience would rather go outside and do something else than sit home and watch England/Germany or Ghana/whoever.

No it isn't. People are interested.

I don't like NASCAR but every time it's on TV I don't bitch and whine like many people do when soccer is on TV I get ready for it...change the channel.

Face it, soccer isn't some niche sport. Hell we have a pro league in the US that averages something like 17k attendance per game. It isn't going to overtake the NFL or anything but it isn't going away anytime either.

The MLS is a niche sport all the way. If it wasn't it would be considered on the same level as the other major sports leagues and clearly it's not.

And I would say any of the fans that like watching the English Premier League in the US are alternative. That's ok if you like it but recognize that you're not in the majority.

Soccer has not caught on despite numerous attempts. I'm sorry. This is another try after the US lost to see if other fans will just start watching the other teams more. Maybe a tiny bit but overall this won't work like all of the other attempts and it will remain a niche sport that the majority of US sports fans find to be too boring.

MLS has about the same average attendance as the NHL and NBA. It's nowhere near as big as the NBA, obviously but it isn't a niche sport.

There are something like 20 million people who watch soccer in the United States. 20 million people aren't a niche by any means.

If what you're saying is true then why doesn't ESPN feature MLS stories more frequently? It doesn't get 1/50th the coverage of the NBA, MLB or NFL.

Same as on all of the talk shows that discuss the topics of the day you rarely ever hear the MLS mentioned.

That's because usually they recognize their audience but once every four years they try to give soccer a little extra boost but then it doesn't work. That's what I'm saying, though, this is that pathetic attempt.

I didn't say it wasn't on. Just that your point about it being up there with the other sports is ridiculous.

Nice to see Germany roll England. A lot of question marks with the German team. Ballick being out and the suicide of the goalie made this a hard team to read and i still can't get a handle on them but on they roll. They are my second team behind USA to root for. I haven't been commenting on them just enjoying watching them play. Fun team to watch.

Let me say that I don't hate the sport entirely. I covered it a lot in the high schools so I liked it a little more the better I understood it.

But it can't really get to a major level in the US like the other sports because the best players play elsewhere, as many have said. The US needs a major star in the MLS taking the league by storm or the team making a run to the finals in the World Cup.

Who is acting like it's a top American sport?

I said it wasn't up there with the NBA or anything (though it's probably about the same as hockey).

ESPN having some things on their front page doesn't mean they think that its taking over or anything. It's just that they are a sporting news outlet and the World Cup is one of if not the biggest sporting event in the world (I don't know if the summer Olympics beat it in viewers or not).

RIGHT NOW in the year, the World Cup is probably the top sport followed in the US. But that's more because of default more than Americans loving soccer. There's just simply nothing else going on.

That's because the US came in with some high hopes and momentum. After their loss, that interest will drop significantly. The luster is gone.

No but obviously when the US team is involved in the tournament, fans are going to watch the other games more to see the competition and just overall be more interested in what's happening.

The circumstances have changed completely now. I think the denial is from the people who are still trying to act like it's the same in the US with them out of the tournament.

LOL.

If soccer wouldn't draw the ratings it draw here in America, ESPN wouldn't have signed up to broadcast the EPL games nor would they bid that much for the rights to the World Cup.
