Its a disagreement. Thats fine. I didn't expect any soccer lovers to agree with me. However, if the US fails to advance any further, one year from now only soccer enthusiasts will care about a goal that beat Algeria in group play.

The topic was US Sports moments, not international effect. Sorry, but soccer is just not that important in the US.

I think it is impossible to really judge this yet. At this point, the goal only puts them in the round of 16. If it would turn out to lead to a championship, it takes on a different meaning. There is a huge difference between finishing with a championship and 16th.

I normally would agree with you AB, but I feel this goal has elevated the sport in this country. Also, to reiterate, I am (well, was) NOT a soccer fan, but this tournament has given me soccer fever. Here I am, passionately writing about soccer, when a month ago I couldn't name 5 players on the US squad. And that is my point really, it is much bigger than a goal sending a team to the round of 16 ... it is a goal that can single-handedly elevate this sport domestically.

I'm just going to quote this. But the reason why the goal is so great not for the reason already mentioned but because THIS goal will help make soccer important in the US millions of Americans who aren't real interested in soccer have gotten behind this team this year and without Donovans goal we would be left we nothing but a very dissapointing WC but instead we got an amazing goal that millions of people watched. I will also say that in 4 years when the next WC comes around we will be seeing highlights of that goal!

Fair enough. As I said before, its just a disagreement on an opinion. I wouldn't expect everyone to agree, especially not those who follow the sport.

And I'll admit that I have acquired a bit of the "soccer fever," and I will be pulling hard for the US this Saturday. But if the US fails to advance, said goal will not have near the effect as many other US sports moments, imo.

I respect your opinion, but I have my doubts about the lasting power of the goal if the team doesn't continue to perform. If they get beat Saturday, the goal is just a great ending to a game. If they would pull off the miracle and win the tournament, the goal takes on an entirely different meaning IMO. For example the Laettner shot is still big 18 years later because that team eventually won a championship. Look at how many buzzer beaters in the NCAA tournament are forgotten when the team loses in the next round.

Good point, and good fact to back it up! However, Calton Fisk's HR in the '75 World Series is still a piece of baseball lore, but few mention that the Sox lost that Series the next day. But I see your point ... as of now, I think we can agree that Donovan's goal was huge. If the US makes a deep run, it could be epic!

That's partly because buzzer beaters are dime a dozen in basketball.

College basketball is my favorite sport....I have never given to fucks about "the shot". Hell, more people HATE Duke, so that shot probably pissed off the country more than they loved it. I just fail to see how anyone can give a domestic result as the biggest American moment. It defies logic. Unless its your team involved people will say wow that was pretty awesome. But every American is rooting for America, unless your some sort of non patriotic douche.

There are a lot of Americans (especially in the Southwest) who are rooting for Mexcio.

Edit: Although many root for them, how many would root for them in a head to head vs the USA? That's where the real douches show their colors.

In the sense of U.S. moments in international competition, you are correct. I think that is where the confusion lies. Is it greatest moments in U.S. sports, or greatest U.S. moments in international sports?

This was a great moment for US soccer but this is nowhere close to the Miracle on Ice. The Miracle on Ice transcended sports and brought in the political aspect with all the tension between the US and the USSR. It would take something of that magnitude to ever top that and I doubt it will ever happen.

Now will Saturday's game get a lot of extra viewers because of this goal, of course it will. I am not a soccer fan by any means but I will always root for my country in international events such as the Olympics and World Cup. That said, unless the US makes a big run to either the semis or finals, the general interest in soccer in this country does not go up that much. If Ghana kicks our ass, people that are not soccer nuts will go back to not caring about it until the next World Cup because that's just how sports fans in America are. We love winners and hate losers. Sure there are exceptions but if they lose Saturday, interest goes right back down and the significance of Donovan's goal is decreased as well. Was a great moment but they have to keep going just like the USA hockey team did in 1980. Not saying they have to win the whole thing but they have to win another game or two.

I think your right also. I think we need to clairfy. Because when we talk great American moments I automatically shift to stuff where the whole country is involved (ie, international). If we just go with great sports moments in America...well, that is different. Then you have every great play to think of. Internationally, you really only have a handful, which is why I would put this goal at 3rd.
