The school fired her for refusing to abide by a school policy. What more would there be? It's certainly an absurd policy, and I appreciate her sticking to her principles, but it doesn't seem like they'd need more reason to fire her.

Agreed, and to add to this, what educator with any semblance of integrity would want to teach at a school with a policy like that? I know, I know, it's a job with a paycheck, but this policy just doesn't seem legit--it makes you wonder what other types of "policies" are in place to help these kids skate through.

I think they need to also fire whoever came up with that policy...

Schools should go by a 4 3 2 1 0 scale and get rid of the 100 to 0 way.

I understand what the school was trying to do, but their policy is wrong to do it the traditional percentage way.

The teacher was full of herself about how important her class is (was).  She was dumb for doing this on her probationary period.  If she would have fought for her opinions during faculty meetings, she would still have a job.

BTW, most homework is bullshit busy work.

(I'll bet there aren't too many, if any, Chatterers who agree with me on this)

If you don't do the work, zero should be zero regardless of the scale used.

So you agree with me somewhat.

Not doing the work and doing the work to the best possible grade should carry the same value for determining an average.

She was also on a probationary period.

Dumb policy for sure, but hard to get ahead in life acting this way. Bet she was extremely difficult to manage (posting on FB? LOL) and the principal was glad to get rid of her.

Like I said.

And I agree with what you said about hard to get ahead and the principal, but not the principle.

You can't be serious.

Ok, let's translate this to work. Let's say you don't show up for work you don't get paid, you get a "0".

Let's say you show up for work but do a terrible job so the boss sends you home half way through the shift. You get paid for the half you were there and get a "negative" mark on your record.

Let's say you show up for work do an amazing job. You get paid and get a positive review possibly getting a raise next cycle around.

What is that more like? your scale of 43210? No, that is like the 0-100 scale. You could still get an "F" at work and get a "50%" by getting sent home and paid for half a day's work, or you can get a zero for not showing up.

The scale they use now reflects real life better than a 01234 as not doing anything at all should not "average out" the same as an "A". It takes one no call no show at some places to get fired, just one, no matter how many "A and B" days you had at said job. A no show at work never averages out an A, it takes many many "As" at work to get the taste of just not showing up out of your boss's mouth. Same with grades, it takes many As to get a "0" averaged up high enough to pass as it should.

Yeah, real life and how we should grade school are not comparable at all.

Probably because its a comparison that makes your suggestion look asinine ;).

For the record:

I believe the district are idiots for such a policy.

I also believe the teacher is an idiot for being insubordinate while still in a probationary situation. You don't piss off your boss until you have another job lined up and you don't care ;).
