No snow we go! wrote: Do you think it is fair to base everything on % of cost of food (check) for the tip? A breakfast waiter/waitress works as hard as a waiter/waitress @ Ruths Chris' Steak house. The size of the checks are worlds apart... yet the service many times... not so much. I tend to tip a much, much higher percentage for breakfast, than dinner.
It depends, like when I go to my local bars if I get 5 beers it's about 10 bucks and I will leave a 3 or 4 dollar tip. When I went to NYC if I got 5 beers it was around 30 or 35 bucks. Its virtually the same process so I tipped about the same, but would throw in an extra buck or two because I know the cost of living is higher their and I am on vacation. Sorry but I'm not going to tip you over 5 dollars for reaching down and grabbing my 5 beers, thats just crazy.
At bars I always tip the same at bars
If it's packed the first time they serve me it's $2 per beer and $3 per mixed drink

Other than that it's always $.50/beer and $1/mixed drink.

i am an athlete and bio major chem minor

i spend a lot of time studying or practicing...i usually eat in the dining hall because i have the unlimited meal plan

but when i am very busy and have a lot to do and cant take 45 minutes to go eat in the dining hall, i call the pizza place and have them deliver my food so i can continue working, i have no car so it would take 20-25 minutes to go get it...thats 20-25 minutes i could be working

so yes i live a half mile away and cant go get it a-hole

lol the place I worked at was small also. I was also delivering in a town with 2500 people. The main reason I was paid for gas/mileage is because the owner used to be a delivery guy himself and he understood the situation. Trust me it wasn't any special money lol.

I picked sometimes b/c there was no choice for almost always.

The only time I don't tip is when service is really, really poor and that is few and far between. Been know to leave a penny so the crappy server knows it's their fault they didn't get a tip. If the server is exceptionally personable, they'll get >20%. I've also been known to tip well in Vegas when I really want good show seats.

Was once told we do it all wrong in the USA... If you want great service, you have to over-tip at the beginning of the experience. You will get great service... or you will not be back.

My grandpa knows exactly what his bill will be everywhere he goes. When we sit down he puts a 20% tip on the table and takes money and adds money as the meal goes.

He gets the best freaking service everywhere.

Went to a wedding reception with an open bar. They were under staffed/over crowded. I slid a $20 to the bartender on my first trip. Didn't wait in line the rest of the night.

Nice Guy Eddie: C'mon, throw in a buck!
Mr. Pink: Uh-uh, I don't tip.
Nice Guy Eddie: You don't tip?
Mr. Pink: Nah, I don't believe in it.
Nice Guy Eddie: You don't believe in tipping?
Mr. Blue: You know what these chicks make? They make shit.
Mr. Pink: Don't give me that. She don't make enough money that she can quit.
Nice Guy Eddie: I don't even know a fucking Jew who'd have the balls to say that. Let me get this straight: you don't ever tip?
Mr. Pink: I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job.
Mr. Blue: Hey, our girl was nice.
Mr. Pink: She was okay. She wasn't anything special.
Mr. Blue: What's special? Take you in the back and suck your dick?
Nice Guy Eddie: I'd go over twelve percent for that.

i tip starting at 15% for resturants and go from there. at bars, i usually only tip for mixed drinks, not beers(unless i buy a lot or something). what bothers me the most though is that people expect a tip, like it's automatic or something.

I consider myself a good tipper. 99% of the problems that occur are not the servers fault, with the exception of those few who don't care and give you bad service like not taking your order forever, refils, etc......those will get a small tip but if I feel whatever occurred was out of the servers control they won't be punished by me for that.
