This astounds me. I start at 10 and go from there. There have been times where I haven't left a tip, but I learned that it sends a better message on bad service if you leave a calculated low tip. Worst service I have had in recent memory got the waitress a tip of 2.5%. That will teach the bitch to grab my food and carryout box from my hand when I say I don't think the food is going to fit and proceed to cram it in there. I also had a chat with the manager after that too.

That is pretty sad.
Yeah man he has a very flawed sense of "logic."

So when you go out to eat you still tip 20% on terrible service? It has nothing to do with being a hardass, the woman was a bitch all night.

I depends, if she is a bitch then no but if it take a while to get your food then it's probably not her/his fault. I have worked in a kitchen and believe me I have screw up my fair share of orders. lol

No not at all, I would go below 20%...but tipping 2.5% is kind of retarded lol why not just leave a few bucks and leave it at that

Always. My little sister used to deliver pizza and I've heard some of the stuff she's had to deal with. I always tipped before that, though and I will continue to do so.

Unfortunately, there is now only one pizza place that delivers to my house and it's not very good. We usually pick up our pizza these days.

I never factor how long it takes to get the food into the tip or the taste of the food. It's always how the server treats me. My food could come out tasting like complete ass after taking an hour to get it, but if the server actually cared about me having my drink filled and making sure I had everything I needed, they would still get a 20% tip.

The 1 exception was one time at Winking Lizard. It was taking forever to get our food, we are talking over an hour, so I stop our waitress to ask if she knew how much longer our food was going to be so we could get some chips or something if it was going to be a lot longer, she responds "What the hell?! Do you SEE all those people waiting for tables?! Do you SEE all the people that are here?! You will get your food when you get it". I promptly :@ I need to speak with your manager now.

We go out to eat a lot and I would say ~98% of the time I think the server deserves 20% or more.

Because then they think you are just cheap. I've always heard from servers that a calculated low tip tells them more than just a few bucks tossed on the table.

Why tip someone for a job I'm capable of doing myself? I can deliver food. I can drive a taxi. I can, and do, cut my own hair. I did, however, tip my urologist. Because, I am unable to pulverize my own kidney stones.

I always start at 20% or $2, whichever is better. If they really suck I have no probblem stiffing them, but a penny is better. Then they know you did it on purpose and aren't just a cheap ass. (like you stated.)

I agree that the time to get the food and the taste is on the kitchen. If the server cares or not is on them.

Are you saying you don't tip the pizza guy because you could get your own pizza, or that you don't have pizza delivered?

Yeah well I only go to the same 3 or 4 places and have eaten at those places on a nearly weekly basis for years now. I know most of the wait staff, and they know what I expect from them and what they can expect in return. It works out pretty well.

If I am on the road and stop someplace I am not a regular at, I usually give 20% unless the service is really bad. I don't base my tip on the quality of the food.

Makes sense. The place where the woman got the 2.5% is somewhere I go weekly and usually tip 25% or better. It's a family owned restaurant and the manager (the father) and the head waiter (the son) were absolutely furious when I told them.

I delivered in the early 80's for a couple years, made a killin because there was hardly any competition. Dino's Pizza was the place. Oh man those were good times. I had great regular customers who tipped big, women who wanted more than pizza, a really cool boss who let me take off for concerts, spring break making 40 deliveries a night, closing down the clubs, then surfing the next morning. I worked 4 - 11pm and made $400 a week.

We've never had to use delivery because we literally live within a block of 2 pizza places. Used to be three but stupid Domino's went out of business. :( I haven't had a Domino's thin crust pizza in forever, it pisses me off. :P

So, a tangent. What's everyone's take on those places that aren't delivery and not really a sit down place that keep a tip jar on the counter. Like Subway or the Giovannis here I think has one. Do you all tip those people? I don't think I ever have.

Yeah, I hardly ever use cash anymore though. It's all debit for me, so they are out of luck.
