...keep her last name when you get married?

My girl feels really bummed out because she realized that after we get married, her family name is going to die out. She's been hinting that she wishes she could keep it and hyphenate her last name.

I said absolutely not. I can't stand it when chicks hyphenate their last name.

Anyone agree with me on this?

Many women I know change their middle name to their maiden name. That way it is still apart of their name, but there is no hyphenation.

keeping their last name....nope, I have no problem with it. The ladies have that perogative if they like.
maybe because I'm the Dad of a daughter.

Another option is to make the first-name of your child the last name of your wife.
Sometimes it works out cool, sometimes not, just depends on the name.

I think the only way this would work (for me) would be if we were professionals or famous. If my wife carried a Ph.D. and had numerous publications under her maiden name, then I'd consider it. Other than that, absolutely not.

huh? She did it because of her name being associated with horse training and championships and stuff. That was the only reason.

Grain of salt, because I'm single. But, I can't ever really imagine having a problem with this. If my wife wanted to keep her name, I would likely care less.

Not to mention, no woman in their right mind, no matter how much they love me, would want to live the rest of their life having to spell my last name, let alone explain to people how to pronounce it.

Unless your children took the hyphenated name her maiden name will die out anyways.

It's her name, why the fuck would I care? I think married couples should come up with a totally new last for both the husband and wife.

If you think that you're truly in it for the long haul would you let this be a deal breaker? Seems that some brides use the hyphenation for reasons that I don't necessarily agree with, but yours seems to be very respectful and considerate of the family. I respect that. What if your family name was about to end and you could do something to keep it alive, would you?

...But I'm not walking in your shoes either. Good luck with that and your marriage too.

Doesn't the family name end with her regardless? The children bore out of this union will have your last name, correct? Also, I know many women that want their children to have the same last name as them.

Unless the plan would be to give them the hyphenated name as well.

If I continue in my line of work, I will keep my last name professionally without hyphenation. Legally, however, I would likely change my name.

I wouldn't say it's a deal breaker. I'm not going to call off the wedding over something like that. But it's something that I feel very strongly about. I can see her point of view.

But at the same time, marriage is supposed to be the complete union of two people. I feel that if the girl hyphenates her last name, there is not that complete union. To me, it's like there is always a divide between the two people.

Exactly. The name ends regardless because our kids will have my last name.

I would never nót change my name but I also don't have a problem with women who do. Not sure why this would be such a huge issue with some men. And that's a serious question.
