So I finally saw District 9 the other night, and thought it was amazing. Definitely one of my favorite's for the year.

Also saw Paranormal Activity and didn't get the hype, though I can see how it would have been scarier in theaters.

Yeah, I'm not going to watch Paranormal Activity now, because I think that watching it at home would just be a downer, or at least I'd miss all of the best things about it.

But District 9 was indeed fantastic.

I hope it gets nominated (and wins) the academy award for best screen play. I thought it was a very unique story. Nothing 100% original per say, but just the way everything was but together, I thought was very smart.

Looks like it set up well for a sequel. Any word on if that will happen?

Nothing set in stone as far as sequels go..but the director has stated that he wants to do one.

I enjoyed it, amazing what effects they had for their budget. It dragged a little at the end but it was still one of my favorite movies of 2009. If "Avatar" paid that much attention to an actual story/acting, it would have been awesome

Thought District 9 was pretty good, much different than I was expecting.

Paranormal Activity on the other hand was a disappointment, not scary at all.

(SPOILER!!!!!!!!)

I agree with everyone, I wasn't expecting to be like a political/documentary sorta feal to the movie. I really liked it, and hope that they make a sequel.

I did not enjoy District 9 as much as I had hoped. It was good, don't think it was great. The story was unique in many respects, but felt recycled in others. Just kind of missed the mark a bit for me.

I also had trouble accepting the premise that these aliens have this great technology, but basically become destitute and powerless. They didn't fight for anything better despite violent tendencies. I guess we are supposed to make the assumption that they got addicted to cat food and became like crackheads.

District 9 is awesome. They could easily churn out some great sequels too.

"I also had trouble accepting the premise that these aliens have this great technology, but basically become destitute and powerless."

That it is a common criticism, and I understand it completely. The plot point that I think they were trying to make was that the aliens that were left behind were in the the "worker" group, and weren't the brains behind the technology, aside from the main alien guy.

I certainly don't think it was a perfect film, but I really enjoyed it, but it does take a leap of faith to see the narrative.

I thought it was pretty awesome. Especially considering the budget.

Hmm didn't even consider that aspect of it before. Guess it was supposed to be a commentary on the whole refuge issue in general. Regardless of whether the story needed some further tweaking, I appreciate that Blomkamp (sp?) made an effort to craft a compelling and thought-provoking film.

it may have been said on here but I read up on it afterwards and apparently the interviews were based on real ones about a true refugee campe.

From pretty early on I took it that the aliens were basically just any minority group that was ever forced to live in a camp type setting...from indians to places in africa...slavery, things like that.

it was OK movie.......let it wide open for a sequel tho

Yeah, there was definitely an analogy to apartheid in South Africa.

I hope that it gets some awards at the Oscars, I'm a bit cynical as to the actual costs of the film but if it is truly what was advertised they did an amazing job with such a small budget. The CGI and special effects were impressive.

I believe it was directly about apartheid. The interviews that were shown were supposed actual interviews. How trur or accurate they were I dont know. It was a bit jumpy camera-wise for me.
