my vote is Mike Leach

Leach's style of play would not be successful in the SEC. Too much emphasis on offense, and not enough on defense. That works in the Big 12 (to a degree) but won't in power conferences.

good point, however, i do not know if i agree or disagree, his "style" has never been attempted in the sec...

Cutcliffe is an outside possibility, but he'd have to retain a good chunk of (what remains of) the coaching staff. The man simply cannot recruit.

His style has been attempted in the SEC. He was the offensive coordinator under Hal Mumme at Kentucky and that is where he really developed his offense. It doesn't work in the SEC, not like in the Big 12. It really doesn't work there either, unless you are alright with maxing out at 10-2, 9-3 consistently. At Tennessee, that won't cut it.

I'm a big fan of Mike Leach, but he wouldn't be a home run hire in Knoxville. Well let me take that back, he might be a home run in terms of name and excitement, but the upside there is limited to a ceiling of remaining 4th fiddle to Alabama, Florida and LSU.

Agree with writer on the D aspect. Leach would be fine were he to put some kind of focus on defense which he has not shown much concern for. If anyone thinks he would be able to run that system in the SEC without a D they're in for a surprise. I think they'd be pretty pissed were he hired myself.

Here's the problem.

Leach's system can make up for some gaps in talent. However, in most of the years when he had inferior talent, he wasn't able to beat the very strong Oklahoma or Texas teams, and usually dropped a game to another conference opponent.

In the SEC, it's a given that the BEST he could do is match the talent on a given roster of LSU, Florida and Alabama maybe 1 in every 3 years, and he wouldn't consistently be ahead of teams like Auburn or Georgia year in and year out. Unlike the Big 12, where TT he could sometimes rank 3rd or 4th in talent, he wouldn't have that advantage very often. Even teams like Arkansas, Mississippi, South Carolina and now MSU and UK (with young new coaches) will still bring in top 30 classes.

Therefore, I think regardless, Leach wouldn't have the same advantage over the rest of the conference schools even with his crazy system. That's why I say that even though he might improve the league as a whole, I'm not sure running his system has the potential to be higher than a consistent top 20 team.

I'm one of the pragmatic ones who knew that Kiffin would have moved on to greener pastures within a six-year time frame. I wasn't expecting a one-year deal....I can't blame him one bit. I think what bothers me most is that fact that Fulmer's last few years is what has caused UT to plummet, and when there's a visible upturn it gets snatched away.

Here's my thinking on Fulmer. Can you name another guy who was head coach for 15 years at a premier program who has NO coaching tree?

Leach also got most of his players from Texas to which next to Cally and Florida has the best talent in the country.
