Yes. There is an Treaty in the Southern Ocean that doesn't allow people to kill minke and fin whales unless its for scientific purposes. In 2005 the Japanese killed over 900 for "scientific" purposes.

LOL than why do the crazy stuff? I would dare anyone to watch the episode where the 'build up' was the attempt to throw a stinkbomb on the whaling vessel deck, notwithstanding that it is probably a good 60 feet above the water, failed miserably - and not laugh your ass off.
There is a term for the sea shepherds - useful idiots. Especially the captain.
I don't understand your point. Before the Japanese put up the nets throwing the stink bombs on the deck was extremely effective.
Either way, they are saving an estimated 300-400 whales a year. I'd hardly call that ineffective.
The Steve Irwin is one ship going against 3. They have limited means available to them since they are under the Dutch flag. What else do you want them to do?
