So his guardian will likely have spent upwards of $100k to try and get him a college scholarship (a guess based on $15k his 8th grade year alone, BEFORE being intentionally held back)? Yeah, solid plan.

It will be interesting to see what happens. He's likely athletic enough and skilled enough to get at least a mid-major scholarship. But a lot of his edge right now is probably all the practice, coaching, lifting and developing sooner than most of his competition. If he's not actually a superior athlete, better athletes will surpass him pretty quickly despite all the work he's put in.

I'd be concerned about over training too. It can't be good for his young joints to train the much.

I'd run over the idiot uncle with my car if I lived in the area.

My concern as well, but he has ten trainers.... Hopefully a few are competent.

The he thing that boggled my mind is they are spending "college money" to get him this training in order to get a scholly.... Seems kind of ass backwards. If anything, it mirrors the obsession that some parents have in chasing college scholarships before their kid hits puberty. It's ludicrous to spend "college money" when you are one injury or accident away from getting nothing in return.

Maybe, but he pretty clearly developed fairly early.

At least he's doing great in school, and being sent to top schools academically (that happen to also have good football teams). But the strict diet and no girlfriend is too much. They even talked about him being held back like he really had no friends at school or on the team.

Checked up on this with a buddy of mine who's kids go to Bergen Catholic...yep he says this kid has the whole region wound up in a HS recruiting war. Don Bosco (perennial NJ Parochial powerhouse) seems to have the inside track. According to my buddy a Don Bosco alum took care of a complete new vinyl siding job for the uncle. He's listed at 5'9" which means he's really 5' 7" on a good day. 15 yrs old he still has some growing to do but doubtful he ever gets much over 6'...this kid will be singing Springsteen's "Glory Days" in 10 yrs.

Exactly! Finally watched his 30 for 30 story on ESPN. Dad is/was a fucking nut! It's no wonder Todd turned to drugs and shit as a release.

This kid will burn out just like Todd Marinovich

Also reminds me in a way of Michael Jackson. Even if this kid achieves all of his (or his uncle's) goals, all it will cost him is his childhood. A person can't miss out on a normal phase of life like that without dramatic effect to his mental and emotional health.

Maybe...maybe not. I hit 6'3'' as a 14 year old freshman....haven't grown an inch since. Thankfully, my parents didn't assume I was going to end up 6'9'' and spend all of their money banking on me becoming a power forward in the NBA.

yeah, but somewhere deep down you know that if they loved you a little more, they would have still put the money down and you'd have a pretty stellar career as a PG going on.

What?

The article states the kid chose Bergen and he is listed on their roster for 2015. The "high school recruiting war" is over. So, no idea how Don Bosco "seems to have the inside track" when there isn't any type of battle happening, per the article.

Ha ha I was 5'9" in the eighth grade. I think I was one of the tallest kids in my class and I never grew another inch either.
