there are plenty of racism coming from the minority communities in the US. Dont see them having to back down.

When are we done with the "black colleges"

Why is it different now? It almost seems like you're making excuses for him. (Maybe I'm reading that wrong) He did it because he was a racist piece of shit. When you say he was mentally ill, it seems to me like you are saying he couldn't help himself.

Prejudice equals Black people like watermelon, can play bass or can play basketball.

Racist equals Black people should die, be slaves or are inferior species because they are black.

Pretty easy to distinguish in my opinion.

Or maybe shooting up a black Church was a way for this wacko to distinguish his notoriety, rather than just another crazy that shot-up a school or movie theater.

I'm not sure we'll ever know his history with being a racist. One friend said the guy had black friends in high school. Just saying it's not impossible his "racism" was manufactured or perhaps triggered by hard drug use and/or a mental breakdown.

Well if you can't tell the difference in racial tension and social norms in 1967 and 2015, I don't know what to tell you.

And I'm not making excuses for the guy. He's a racist sack of shit who should be burned alive as a death penalty. But he was definitely mentally not-all-there.

If that's the case, why wouldn't they sentence him to a psychiatric facility?

Mentally ill doesn't mean he was insane/incompetent. He might "serve" in a psychiatric facility, but it's probably not enough to keep him off death row. One can be seriously mentally ill and still know their actions were wrong, especially when talking about something premeditated.

The vast majority of murders are a little mentally unstable. But it seems as if whenever there is a mass murder that is the first label most try and put on the person if it's a white guy.

But it's almost always a white guy, at least in the US.

From what I've read about the dude, at the least he was a very high-functioning psycho. He seemed to have compiled a lot of information and had a definite plan for what he wanted to do. More of a sociopath than a frothing loony, in any case.

Aaron Alexis, the guy who shot up the Navy Yard in DC in September 2013 was black. He was definitely labeled mentally unstable.

I don't know how "mentally ill" this guy is. He said that when he sat down and got to know the people in that church, he "almost couldn't go through with it because they were so nice to him" so he was aware of his actions and knew they were wrong. One would think this would take any insanity defense off the table if they push for the death penalty. I think the dude was more of a racist POS than he was mentally ill.

The fact that most, if not all of them have been on some kind of medication for the treatment of mental illness makes it easier.

That's my point. You can have serious mental issues but you have to be batshit loco to get off on insanity when it was premeditated. There are plenty of people with serious mental issues who are functional. Saying his mental issues/drug use were likely a significant contributing factor isn't the same as saying he didn't know what he was doing.

Should any mental illness shield you from regular sentencing when you killed 9 innocent people? Lots of diseases sentence you to death, and if you have a mental illness that caused you to kill nine people maybe that should too.
