What do you have to say about the down trodden and violent places in the rural parts of this nation that are mostly conservative? I'm a moderate republican and I'll even admit parties don't matter as much as poverty and crime do. When the educated tax base all leaves for the suburbs what else is there to do?

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/05/28/baltimore-riots-will-cost-city-at-least-20-million/

The city of Baltimore seeks up to $20 million in federal reimbursment, for their costs alone. That does not include the cost and damages to businesses. The Small Business Administration estimated that 38 small businesses were damaged to the tune of $9 million. Additional loss of business revenue tops $30 million.

I'm a little mixed on the prosecutor. So I'm a bit torn saying it's unfair to hang these guys out to dry to quell rioting directly resulting from their negligence, unintentional or not.

Of course, it's not that simple. In this case, we're seeing how malicious prosecution has caused officers to pull back and be reactive, which may be even worse than the rioting. And the rioting didn't have to get to that point, in the first place. The decision to basically let them "vent" was irresponsible at best. Any protestors who got hurt by police trying to control things may have led to even worse rioting. In that sense, "accepting" $30M in property damage might have been an exercise in risk management.

One issue you definitely can fault the prosecutor for....how can you overcharge like that and then work out a reasonable plea deal without inflaming the protestors that have been "led" to believe these guys are guilty of murder?

My suspicion is this has been handled poorly all around. But let's see what charges the DA actually takes to trial, the outcome and then what happens.

I am just curious what evidence and witnesses they have. The guy in the van already went public and said the ride wasn't that rough, at least from when he was put in the van. no one is reporting the arresting cops beat him.

True. But my understanding is he was only picked up at the tail end. He maybe didn't have a rough ride, but that really says nothing about the 40 minutes prior for Freddie Gray.

Honestly, I think the charge that may stick is failure to properly restrain (implemented DAYS earlier). I've heard nothing of evidence indicating a rough ride. It was a fluke accident. What may be more liable is the failure to get medical attention - that's where I think gross negligence could come into play

I am curious as to what the officers originally reported in their statement. its not impossible, but I find it hard to believe they KNOW he stopped breathing or whatever during the trip back to the PD and didn't do anything.

My understanding was they did not provide immediate medical attention when he asked even back at the station, which apparently isn't uncommon. The problem is how they would have known he had a serious neck injury. But that's something for a jury to decide

I thought I heard they made a few unscheduled stops, which could indicate a rough ride or that they had injury concerns they ignored. But on its own that's purely circumstantial.

Inconsistencies in their stories/reports would really damage their credibility. But I still don't see how any of them get convicted of criminal manslaughter beyond a reasonable doubt.

Someone can check my math because I suck at it.

So 385 people have been killed by police in 2015.
Only 49 were unarmed. (14%)
Half of the victims were white, the other half minorities. Of the minority half, 2/3 were black or Hispanic. So if my math is correct, 127 or only 32% were black OR Hispanic.

To me that is much less than the media would make you think.

Maybe it's that young woman whose photo is making the rounds on Facebook, the one pooping on the American flag? Goes by a strange nom de guerre, nocturne something.

Freddie Gray's family awarded $6.4M in a settlement.

Only in America can you be a thug piece of shit and earn $6.4M. $10 says they blow it within a year and are back on welfare.

$6.4 million ransom to keep the rent-a-rioters from showing up again.

If only the libtards on here could spend a day in the shoes of an urban cop.

I don't really have issue with the award, although maybe I feel it's double what it should have been.

They screwed up multiple times, resulting not only in his death but in pain & suffering. This has happened before, and such punitive awards are a major reason WHY cops are supposed to restrain you in the wagons.
