Pay inequality makes zero sense. If a woman is equally qualified and is agreeable to putting in the same time and effort as a man, she will get the same pay. If an employer even tried to pay her below the market rate for men and she were qualified for it, she would leave immediately to go get that rate at another employer. Women would never have to stay with a company that paid less for the same work. The key word is "same". If that is not there, then it isn't pay inequality...it's two different rates of pay for two different jobs.

....they are NOT GIRLS they are women!....well, smack your little leftist behind and turn in your "progressive" card.

The original point of this thread is that this is a group of entertainers being recognized for accomplishments in their field, and they can't just keep their f' ing mouth shut and stay on point. Talk about the movie, talk about how you prepared for the part, who inspired you, tell funny anecdotes, etc etc....just keep it light and festive and save the controversy for another platform.

That's a different discussion. I didn't mind Common/J. Legend discussing it as it was relevant to the movie. Patricia Arquette played a single mom trying to make ends meet in Boyhood so it's also a bit relevant, but could have done without it. Usually I'm with you, and don't care or gaf to hear an entertainer's opinion on a social subject.

That doesn't make what was said less true though.

It isn't true. Your list of salaries at Sony meant nothing without having experience, what they bring to the company, etc into it. In the real business world, which you clearly aren't a part of, women do not work hand in hand with men and make less. It just doesn't happen. They might not advance as far due to maternity leaves, less desire to move up to that position due to workload, of other factors, but if they have same degrees, same experience, years in, etc, they are paid close to the same.

You come on a bunch of threads and bash people for posting right wing articles and watching Fox News, but all you do is toe the party line.

Also, there is already a gender law passed in the 60's that you have to have equal pay for equal work. So stop with the "we must pass new laws to counteract this WAR ON WOMEN". (Not you, in general).

And that's exactly what I didn't do...watch. Hearing about it the next day and what went on made me glad that I didn't.

The only thing that I was sorry to have missed, was Gaga doing the Sound of Music medley, but I caught it on you tube the next day. Gaga has a great set of pipes and she's been stretching her range of music, doing an album with Tony Bennett late last year. I doubt most people would think she has that capability.

Time and place, not all the time or just anywhere, the usage of discretion is just as effective as the message…
I think the general viewing population was turned off by the continuous rants, which did more harm to the cause than good. The fact that those doing the ranting presented misleading and false information evident to the viewing audience also diminishes the validity of their rant.

Well said. The reality is its pretty easy to find the average salary for a position and its ranges(top 10%, bottom 10%) on plenty of free websites. If a woman feels she is being underpaid, she is free to leave the company and go for a bigger salary. Not shockingly this also applies to men who aren't just arbitrarily granted more money because he's a man. Again, shocking! Women have the power to fix this problem by themselves so why is this a problem?

It's a nice talking point for liberals to make something up that everyone agrees with(equality for women), make it a social problem that doesn't need or require a solution, and then bash the other side for not fixing it while taking the high ground. Anyone who falls for it is instantly deemed an uneducated piece of shit.

Exactly and what would the solution be anyways. Government regulators setting wages? Get a meaningful education and get to work.

The solution they want is probably what the government has; a table with set wages based on education and years of experience. We know how well that works for attracting talent and retaining talent in the public sector. You're right though, stop crying and get to work.

Well apparently it was a powerful tool this time as well. It has your panties riding up your ass something fierce! You don't like the message stop watching the show. But instead you want to whine and bitch about what someone said on a awards show on tv. Do you know how ridiculous you sound?

I just think it's really amusing the guy who never hesitates to mention how awesome and fulfilling his life is while criticizing others for (in his eyes) not having the same "lofty" goals to be a success or wasting time engaging in pastimes he doesn't look at as important...actually sits around watching meaningless awards shows to bitch about peoples' views and what they want to talk about.

So you're saying you don't want to discuss what you prefer to refrigerate or not?

lol, if there was ever a thread that could validate a person's life in the "Man, at least you aren't so far gone to think this a good conversation piece!" that was the winner!

I think this is a valid thread because I don't watch it anymore because I'm tired of the causes de jour being put on display by people who are trying to make themselves relevant beyond their field of expertise. I used to be a huge movie buff and look forward to the Oscars and all the glitz and glamour that went along the world's best ENTERTAINERS doing what they did best. But since 2003, when a few decided to use the Oscars as a stage to protest the invasion of Iraq, the show has increasingly become political where it seems everyone has to do something to grab attention by getting up there and trumpeting some cause celebre.
I, for one, don't enjoy it anymore. If I want politics, there are plenty of other places to get it, from people with a degree of expertise beyond acting.
