Brenner was already there. I believe Hoobler already graduated from Indiana but has 1-2 years of eligibility left from injury and a redshirt. Max is enrolling, but I have not heard a "for sure" on Stu Turner but rumor is he will be there also.

Not that I recommend spending the $8 they want for them, but FYI our "old" Red Rider has his pic and brief caption in both Lindy's and Sporting News College Football previews that just hit the shelves. Also in Bleacher Report preseason all conference picks (2nd team) I'll try to link but I'm tech hindered..haha

This. One million times over. It's not fair to the kids now to compare them to kids 30 years ago. You can say kids need to be tougher or work harder or whatever....but it's simply different. You're blind & dumb if you think it's not different.

Our town & society in general is wildly different than it was in the 80's.

Industry that brought families here from the Massillon/Canton are all closed up. Those families put down roots, bought homes, raised kids & were involved. We don't have that anymore.

Let's face it...we're a commuter town. People come here to work from 9 to 5 and then leave. JLG workers head south to Tusc. county and Smuckers folks head north to Summit & Medina County. Smith Dairy drivers are mostly 50+ and their kids are grown....probably moved away and not coming back. Those are your 3 big employers in town along with QC.

I heard Orrville no longer has a slow pitch industrial softball league....anyone care to guess why?? BECAUSE NOBODY THAT WORKS HERE, LIVES HERE!!! And if they do, they're 50+ and past their prime softball playing days. Pickup soccer games have replaced slow pitch softball.

Our town isn't thriving as it was in the 80's & 90's. Population is stagnant but the makeup of the town, demographically & economically, is what is changing. Look at the # of kids on free lunches in the schools. Probably at or near 50%.

Flash is right...we'll have some success on the girls side, but the 2 big money sports (football & boys basketball) will struggle. We've never had depth...but toss in a dip in talent and it's not too hard to figure out the outcome.

Your "fans" who expect us to beat Wooster and win 9 games a season in football are going to be in for some tough years with very misplaced expectations. It will take a toll on coaches too...and we'll probably lose some good ones along the way....just as we're risking losing athletes because they're tired of losing by the 8th grade.
One drive through my old town and you can see the changes, a few discussions with faithful town born and bread individuals kind of reinforces these concerns. Makes me sad, but with that said. It can be done, the record in the OCC that old rider shared really surprised me! We as a town have really been blessed to see some serious talent walk around in that stadium. Win, loose, whatever, I simply bleed Orrville red baby! Lets see how it goes! Go get it boys!

Since 2009-10 School year

2010: State runner up in basketball
2010: Final 4 in football
2012: Final 4 in volleyball
2013: Final 4 in girls basketball
2014: Final 4 in baseball

Not bad, IMO. And that's just in the last 5 years.

I think we're up to 29 final fours in school history...that's among all team sports. If girls track finishes top 4 this weekend (very possible)...that would be #30.

...and we also had Dennis Raber win a wrestling title in that time also if I'm not mistaken.

There isn't a coach in the country that could win games with the talent and the low participation numbers that we are experiencing right now in Orrville. Pretty sure the administration sees this as well. He isn't going anywhere unless he steps down on his own.

I wasn't going to take the bait of someone using their 1st post to talk about a "rumor." Well said OldRider.

You forgot to mention the conference we play in.....already the smallest school and now have to try and compete with low numbers & a dip in talent. We've competed based on our talent...and now we have a lot less of that...even compared to last year.

Best thing we can do is support the kids and coaches. They will extract all they can and the kids that do play will give it their all.

Drove by conditioning last night and I counted about 40 kids (give or take a few). That includes freshman and I saw some middle school kids as well. Yikes!!! What is going on???

Our DV 7th grade team has had near 40 kids some seasons!

That is how it used to be in Orrville every year. In the last 12 years we have seen numbers drop like a rock. I know we are not the only town with low participation numbers, but this IS a football town and kids, for one reason or another, are choosing not to play. I still think the beating our middle schoolers are taking by playing in the OCC has played the biggest role in the low numbers at the high school level! When your getting pounded every game and losing all the time...what fun is that!

Nothing new! We have dressed less than 30 for Wooster games in the past and still won! Just have to have 11 good players ! Not sure that is in the cards this year! Go Riders!

You guys have middle school football?

The teams locally who have youth football tend to have bad HS programs for the most part, and the ones that start football in 7th grade have been absolutely tearing it up and have great numbers. Locally it seems that youth football is weeding the numbers well before they are at that level to know if they can contribute to football!


and you do need more than 11 good players. You gonna have all 11 go both ways? I am a proponant of putting your best guys on the field even if it means going both ways, but most times that is just 3-5 guys at max who get alot of PT both sides of the ball.


Not saying that having youth football leads to bad HS teams. Not at all. Just saying that to have a great HS team it is not imperative that you have youth football.

My "exactly" comment was directed at redrights second statement that said "not sure thats in the cards this year". We WILL struggle unfortunatley.

And yes...pee wee football has done NOTHING GOOD for our program!!

Man what a bunch of cry babies on here! No wonder these kids are soft we are all letting them off the hook...the schedule is to hard, we are to small, shut up and Play. Numbers may start to go up as I have heard one of the pee wee leagues in Orrville is going bye bye. The numbers started to drop after that was put into place. I will take my 7th and 8th graders hungry to hit. Some of them have been playing for years by the time they get there. It has not helped.

Get in the weight room, work hard, and prove people wrong Riders!

Interesting to see the discussion on Pee Wee football.... I seem to remember a lot of people swearing it would help to foster better tacklers and overall fundamental football players? Flag at the club was where it was at baby! LOL! Do high school players still coach flag football teams at the club? That was something I will NEVER forget! I really did think those guys were gladiators when I was young! They showed up all bruised and bloody to coach on Saturday mornings....... ANYWAYS, do you guys that are still local think we have ANY real talent that isn't playing? What I mean is do we have athletes that simply choose not to play or are we just lacking ability period? I just can't imagine being a boy in Orrville and not "wanting" to at least try and play football? Times sure are changing.

Last year the high school kids did not coach flag, however the year prior they did. I think it was a schedule conflict from what I was told.

As far as the talent...from what I see and have been told, we are simply lacking the number of kids with talent. 2-3 talented kids per class as opposed to 6-7 per class in years past. Couple that with low participation numbers and there you have it. It is going to be a long time before we see above .500 football in Orrville again....prove me wrong Riders!....PLEASE prove me wrong!

ONE of the issues of Pee Wee football is they dont learn the fundamentals. Many are coached by overzealous dads. I think in our area it runs off kids more than it helps. Imagine around the state that many HS state champions also have Pee Wee football, but I dont think it is a prerequiste. The 3 county teams that dont have Pee Wee football have combined for 17 state football titles since 1990, most of which since 2000, and the 3 that do have it, and have for awhile now and those kids have gone through the system, havent made the playoffs in 10 plus years.

We can get into the why it has happened but I think it runs off kids. The positions and skill sets at those young ages are just not developed yet. Youth sports for baseball, basketball and such have all the positions with pretty the same or similair skill sets so when they get older and grow into their body and abilities they just move positions. The skill sets in football from position to position are much more diff than one another than in the other sports.

and also lets face it...in FB there are only a few "glamor" positions that many of the kids want to play. At least in hoops and baseball everyone gets to hit, throw, shoot, etc and they are happy with it.

For those places that have it and their HS programs are good, more power to ya. For places to think it will help, and is a need for the HS program, then I think that is far fetched.

Local schools dont have it, and no one wants to add it.

I was never a big fan of tackle football for youth. I have nothing against it and I am sure the success or failure of the program hinges greatly on those in charge who most often are volunteers. My three boys never played tackle until 7th grade....they were very eager at that point. Didn't seem to affect their football skills as far as development goes. I have watched a minimal amount of peewee games, but what I did see was little or no technique...90% of kids just not athletic/strong enough to play properly. Yes, you have your exceptions, but not the majority. I don't think tackle football before junior high age determines success in high school. might be a bit behind in 7th grade but will catch up quickly with proper coaching and conditioning. my two cents anyway.

Bro in law coaches 7th grade locally for a school that doesnt have it and he says he notices a little bit of a difference if you play a team early in the season who had youth football but when they play one of those teams later in the season they have already caught up and overtaken them.

To each their own I guess. I know some places are wanting to do away with their's and go to flag football. Not sure how great that is as not many around here have that either.
