I have grown to dislike Vitale as the years have passed, but I echo those sentiments. Felt the same way when Mike Patrick, perhaps my all-time favorite announcer, was phased out as the rivalry's chief play-by-play man around 2004. Offensively, yes. Defensively, no. This team has flaws on offense. Its not always easy for them and its not always pretty. But defensively, they are just so big and long on the inside, they are get away with doing things that other teams can't. That length makes up for some many mistakes. THey can gamble on the perimeter, and get away with it. And usually, that gamble ends up leading to an easy basket at the other end. That is the difference, and a big one at that. With Vitale and ESPN, it's goes way beyond tradition. He is arguably the SOLE reason ESPN is as big as it is today. What he did to get college basketball on TV and the contracts he was able to land for ESPN is the biggest reason they were able to expand into anything resembling a major player in sports.
