I've never been a reader of scifi fantasy. But I've heard so much about these and I'm intrigued. Two questions:

Do they translate well for the non scifi fantasy reader?

Should the book precede the TV show?

Yes.

No. The show is very close to the book. The books go into much more detail, obviously.

To go into a bit more detail on your first question, while the books have their share of magic, dragons, blood magic and undead, those things often take second billing to court intrigue, treason and other stuff that could be ripped out of Europe during their more medieval-era wars. You can go multiple chapters without having any real contact with anything that wouldn't fit into a real-life scenario from that time period.

Finished up a re-read over the weekend. The Great Northern Conspiracy makes the last two books much more enjoyable to read.

Re-reading now hoping to finish before Sunday night. It will take a small miracle for that to happen with baseball going on.
