Lets move the boys game vs. Waynedale to Wooster and play a boys/girls doubleheader on Friday!

It's official.

Girls at 6pm in Wooster
Boys at home vs Waynedale at 8:15

Wooster wouldn't be big enough to have Orrville fans on one side and Smithville/Waynedale fans on the other. COW maybe but they're hosting the NCAC tourney.

Not sure why we couldn't move the boys to Saturday afternoon but for all we know, there could be some junior league basketball tournament happening at our gym or any number of reasons why it can't be moved.

Just hoping for 2 wins on Friday....that would really piss off the county.

Are you predicting a Smithie win over Manchester??

Yes...sending more of the county schools packing will really bring the haters out!

GO RED RIDERS!

Yes, the county would really be mad, we really hate Orrville. It consumes us actually. If we could, we would have voted a wcal player as MVP of the occ but we haven't figured out how to make that happen yet. I'm sorry for being a smart alec but this playing the martyr business is really funny to everyone. The riders have a great tradition that I greatly respect and admire and so do most others. They play in a very tough conference that has obviously prepared them well year in and year out. The list of slights is endless - a two seed? Unbelievable! Finishing second in a meaningless district player of the year? Horrible! This whole everyone is against Orrville thing is pure comedy.

You can joke but you know that 90+ percent of what we are putting on here about the feelings about Orrville from the WCAL is correct.

I am just playing around, but I also am a huge area sports fan with quite a few acquaintances that are the same and I'm telling you this hatred just does not exist on any widespread level. I get the motivational aspect you are trying to use and appreciate that. The reality is that it's a real stretch. Do you know who in the county was mad when you beat Chippewa? Chippewa! I read the paper, was surprised and moved to the next story like everyone else outside of Chippewa township.

There are people like that out there...there are more that would smile ear to ear if Orrville loses. We have a bulls eye on our chest. Men and Women.

A lot of the "hate" I see is on twitter..which is dominated by school kids.

Who wouldn't like to beat us? We're the most successful program in the area...and with that comes some arrogance from us & some hate & jealousy directed towards us.

Take tomorrow night for example...If the girls lose to Smithville and the boys lose to Waynedale tomorrow..in the span of 4 hours...it will be a really bad night. Everyone will get a good laugh & we get to live with another loss to a county school.

But as we become more & more like county schools in terms of size, we should probably get used to that happening more often.

20 years ago we never ran into county teams in football and rarely in basketball. Now it's much more common.

Three observations:
1. Is the supposed slight of Orrville by county schools based on Orrville's slight toward county schools? Orrville used to be much larger than county schools and therefore looked down on county schools as lesser competition. Likewise, county schools looked at a possible win against Orrville as a big victory mainly because of the size difference. I think that this supposed hatred is a misunderstanding. The pride of a county school to beat Orrville is a sign of respect. What needs to be understood is that the size of many of the schools are similar today and the playing field has begun to level off. Orrville still has an advantage in two ways: tradition and league play.
2. I think that rooting against Orrville is overrated. Maybe its not rooting against Orrville but rather rooting for a fellow county school team (I think that the WCAL, despite the competition, has a high level of respect and encouragement for other schools).
3. Finally, Orrville's arrogance from my vantage point is real. Orrville plays in a win-win situation. With the league that Orrville plays in, it is not expected to win. So.. if Orrville beats a larger school than Orrville makes it known that it not only won a game but who it won against. On the other hand, if Orrville loses, than I continually hear about the shrinking size of Orrville schools (some may call this an excuse). I hear a great deal of this because I am married to an Orrville gal and therefore have Orrville in-laws.

Well...since you are married to an Orrville girl you should move to Orrville and join us! Happy wife=happy life. Have kids (if not already) and have some future Red Riders!

Exactly. It's not the old days where someone could hook you up with a nice factory job or a cushy office job...but we'll do our best.

...and still plenty here in Orrville! But you have avoid moving into the Smucker Co. area because they will just buy you out and tear your place down. Ask Martavious Dyson!

As I read this I wanted to come through this computer and slap you myself..."we should probably get used to that happening more often" WHAT!!

I expect two victories by the Riders tonight! I want these kids to know it is not okay to lose in the county. Put one WCAL team in our conference and they would tap out in year one. We are better than them and I don't want to hear anything else. Win and shut them up tonight!

Losing is never OK...my point was that in the 80's and 90's we NEVER PLAYED THE WCAL IN FOOTBALL, and rarely in basketball. It was easy to walk around with our chests puffed out...because we never had to back it up on the field. I'm pretty certain that we'd have handled things had it come up...but that led to some arrogance on our part, and this air of invincibility.

Norwayne 2011 football was their "once in a generation" team....just like Norwayne basketball back in 1994 was their "once a generation" team. It took their best in several decades to beat us once.

Now that we're the same size as the top 4 in the county, those games vs WCAL teams are going to happen more often. Look at our region in football....we used to be D-3 and all the county teams were D-5..we never had to worry about it. Now our region is full of county teams.

Not saying it's OK or should be accepted...I'm proud of our performance in a much tougher conference...but when it boils down to 1 game on 1 night, you never know.

It will happen again at some point. Perfection is a very high standard to put on our kids.

The one thing we can all agree on is that NO MATTER what sport (boys or girls), the county schools ALWAYS seem to bring their "A game" when it comes to playing us. Not saying that they play differently against their league opponents, but beating Orrville can make their ENTIRE season...regardless of total wins/losses.

I listened to Coach Harbour's pregame speech before the 11' state game and he made reference to the Orrville game a few times. It definately gave them more confidence and had they lost the following game...their season was capped off with a nice playoff run, but more importantly...they beat Orrville.

Triway beat us in football my junior year (93 season) for the first time in about 16-17 years and they rushed the field...followed by the team, coaches, and members of the community sleeping on their field that night.

Norwayne beat us in basketball for the district title in 94, but lost the next game. Talking to several of those players from that team in later years and they told me that their season highlight was not only a district title...but that they beat Orrville!

Now that Orrville appears more and more on the county school's regular season schedules, I would agree with RR1...we are going to see the potential for more losses against them and hear more of the "who's better" debate.

This all makes me want to throw up...

I get that it can happen, but I do expect Orrville to be better and to win against any WCAL team. Old Rider I remember every one of those games and to this day they make me sick. Orrville will get the best shot from the WCAL teams tonight, but I expect to win.

These kids need to understand that the expectation is you don't lose these type of games and that we play up for a reason and that reason is tonight.

And if that doesn't say how much we're respected in the area, I don't know what will. We call it hate, but I think it's respect.

Remember how it used to be that we could never beat St V in basketball in the 80's and early 90's? How many good Orrville teams couldn't get by St V in the districts? We finally did in 92 and went on to win state. I'm sure the state title is the best memory from that season, but right beside it is the win vs. St V...a team we could never get past....and we finally did.

It's not quite the same, but we're sort of the St V of the district now. We get everyone's best shot and it's a big deal if we get beat.

We should want to beat county schools and they should want to beat us!

Old Rider - Do you remember your sophomore year??? A young man from a county school came on board and really didn't do much...Unfortunately he couldn't make the punt team.... He went on to move to one of the county schools and lead the team in rushing??? That was one incident that played the divide up even more!!! It got played both ways in the rumor, argument mill. Truth is Orrville has always "quietly" better than the county schools. And in most cases had the schedule, record and bumps to prove it. The county schools have always used that as motivation.... And so would I! We all need to toughen up our skins and let it get figured out on the court and field.

Other sports played into a lot of these "opinions"..... For example, Track and Field is a big one, a lot of football players ran track at Orrville to stay in shape for football. Baseball would be another example.

I disliked every team we ever played until it was over (with two exceptions). But I would cheer for them if they were in the playoffs or doing well. Any attention to the county is good for the county!! I don't know if HATE is the right word, I do believe the environment kids are in today with social media and instant communications has made the "county hate" bigger than it really is. But I am a bit out of the loop.
