No...same thing happened to us every year over in Canton with the NBC teams. Ask Triway (Pitman would agree). When multiple teams from one league are in the same district they all stick together and vote for "their" conference (as they should). Sly witnessed it as an assistant when we played in the Canton District. He knew the outcome of the voting before it even took place. No secret there!

The greater question is why didn't Coach West vote for the Riders as the #1 seed?

Well our coach made a fair and educational decision based on the facts presented. We realize the WCAL coaches stick together. Tuslaw should have received the 4th seed but their an outsider too! The facts are facts and voting Stoudmire over Summers for POY was not an educational decision based on the facts. Anyone with a basketball mind can see the POY voting was skewed. It was a scratch my back I scratch yours!

i understand that and since i had the pleasure of playing in the canton district against the red riders all those years ago i know what you are talking about. when i played we went to the seeding to see how the other schools would vote and for who. if i would have been there and seen my coach not vote for us in front of his peers it would have sent the wrong message but i guess i may be wired differently than todays youth. i know your program and the tradition you have and much respect goes out to you, but i just thought you send the wrong message regardless of what the other coaches do that's all. in fact in the d2 vote i heard they had two schools actually have to stand up and talk about how they were better than the other for a vote. just a feeling as a former player that if you are the best you should say it and not care what the outcome of the coaches would be voting wise.

Summers is hands down the POY in this District. This a definitely an example of the non-respect the WCAL Coaches have for Orrville Athletics and the OCC Conference. To make it even worse Summers isn't even an alternate to the North-South game......they voted a Smithville player. does the Player of the Year have to come from the 1 seed? Pitman can you confirm any of this? I believe you were there? Anyone else hear this? Agree or dis-agree?
rrfan;1582225 wrote:Have not seen Norwayne kid play enough to know for sure. Pitman would be the one that would probably have that info.

However, this is another chip on the shoulder boys!!
To be honest, this is the first I've ever heard of any "District POY" outside of the Northeast Inland "District." A co-worker brought this thread to my attention, and I was confused. He told me he was voted DIII Wooster District 1st Team twice (his Jr and Sr years), so it must be a real thing.? Haha! Is the voting done at the seeding, or after the tournament? As soon as the seeds and brackets are complete, I leave, so I've never stayed after to see what happens. But considering I've seen many coaches leave right after, as well, always led me to believe there is no other voting at the Fieldhouse. But I could definitely be wrong. Hmm... I'll have to look into this!

By the way, my co-worker (a WCAL guy) and I both agree Summers should have been the DIII Wooster District POY, if there is such a thing.

That and a cup of coffee will get Orrville the #1 seed...Pitman is this your favorite time of year? I love tourney time for HS Basketball.

By the way Great job by the Rider Girls last night!

I can understand this point of view...

West Holmes named OCC champs. Senior played with ineligible player.

Will West Holmes go from 1st to near-worst in one year by losing Arnold?

They have a very good coach in Troyer. I think he will find a way to win games w/o Arnold.

Player that was ineligible was going to an alternative school and the grade didn't get reported right, but when coach found out it was reported. Too bad for Senior but was a classy move to fess up right away.

I agree...but it is easier to fess up when you still get to go to the tourney.

Yea , better to happen at the end of the season after the draw than before, but they've lost serious fire power and their season isn't going to be like it was predicted early on before they lost their two big men.

More on this district player of the year thing......Looks like it's a district of the Ohio High School Basketball coaches Assn. Our area of the state is in district 4, and it's broken down by divisions. Here's what their site has on past all-star teams: http://www.district4coaches.org/Awards.htm

Pitman is right, there always used to be (and still is) a NE Inland District team (which was voted on by area writers)...and in our area you also had various all-conference teams (OCC, WCAL, PAC) and the All-DR team.

So this District All-Star/POY thing is voted on by coaches of the teams and it's been around since 2005 it seems. It also appears that they haven't updated their website since the 2011 season.

In that year, the District 4-Division 3 teams were:
Orrville, Canton CC, St Thomas, E Canton, Triway (who is now D-2), Tuslaw, Loudonville.....and WCAL teams Northwestern, Norwayne, Hillsdale, Waynedale, Smithville, Chippewa. Dalton would now be a part of this group as they are now D-3.

So around 15 teams....and 7 of them from 1 conference.

Any wonder why a WCAL kid was district POY? Simple. It was collusion. The WCAL backscratchers got together and voted a Norwayne kid as their conf. POY, and then voted ANOTHER Norwayne kid as the District 4 POY (probably on the same night). The non-WCAL coaches probably voted for several different kids, but the WCAL's Band of Brothers all voting for 1 guy made him POY.

So a kid will be district POY that wasn't even his own conference's POY.

I never put much stock in that type of thing. Give me a team that wins over having "some individual award"

Shame really, This kid is probably a good player in his own right and has to defend this award because "adults" can't put all their mud aside! I don't mean our debate about it either but that these teams and coaches stick together to the point of overlooking another more deserving kid because of where he plays? Sad to see this still happening out there. You would think there would be some formula of checks and balances to keep this kind of "Collusion" in check. Sure makes the awards themselves seem empty....... I hope you are wrong Redrider1, I really do for this kids sake. VERY sad to me.

It's not specific to the Wooster district...just all D-3 schools in a certain geographic area (district 4).

That's why CCC & St Thomas had kids on the list a few years ago.

And you might need to contact the email on that website I linked to ask them for a list of the all stars & POY

Looks like the boy's game may be changed to Saturday. It depends on Da Bears. I'd think Waynedale would want 1 more day of rest and preparation time for the Riders. With the girls winning and playing at Wooster on Friday at 7:00pm, I'd hope the Bears would be kind and move the game back 1 day. Waynedale won tonight, Northwestern beat Tuslaw and Smithville lost to Fairless and their 6'10' giant.

Not sure I like this playing the first 2 games at higher seeded teams court. Maybe the first game, but I think it takes a lot away from the tournament atmosphere and makes it harder on the real basketball fan to see as many games as possible. This is a 2 year experiment and I like the higher seed getting the first game since most of those are laughers and the home crowd can come out to see a game without being inconvenienced, but I like it the old way better.

Kent said they want to move the girls game up an hour to 6pm & the boys game back to 8:15. Waiting on approval from the NEDAB.

I like the idea of different days personally...

Congratulations to the Lady Riders on a nice win last night! Also, to coach Alberts on six great years at Orrville...I hope many more to come.
