It has been reported for a while the Yankees weren't going to go over $175 million. If you're Seattle, why not top out at say $200 million or so knowing there was no one else in play anywhere near that number?

If Robby Cano can get 10/240 at age 31, what in the world does Mike Trout get when he hits the market in 2017 at age 26?

The way things are going Trout should blow well past $350 million on probably a 12-13 year deal. I am now convinced some team is dumb enough to do that kind of deal.
I love how you assume so much lol and act like what you hear, as a fan, is how it went down.

Yanks offer 175, mariners offer 240. No, they didn't try and negotiate for 200, they were dead set on giving him 240. And no, another team didn't offer 230 for cano, driving the mariners to offer 240.

The mariners just wanted to do 240.

^^^^really....somebody offered $230???....who? the reds? If they didn't offer $240, the Angels were there lurking to snap him up at $235? LOL.

I definitely believe the intricate details and potential contract often don't get to us.

Granderson got 4/$60 from the Mets. That was a potential Choo destination.

This is typical Scott Boras. He lets the first wave pass and then finds the needle in the haystack willing to way overpay for his guy.

Choo is likely going to get $120+ which is still astounding to me. I wouldn't have believed it at the start of last year, but with the way prices are right now it will seem like a bargain I guess.

I didn't say that. I said how does iggy know that didn't happen?

His "the mariners are dumb they offered 65 million more than they needed to" is incredibly short sighted and makes it seem like he knows what he's talking about. When he probably doesn't.

^^^ok, agree that the exact figure is in doubt,, but I just don't see who's bidding this up that high. There are only a handful that would take on that kind of a contract. I'm sure details will come out at some point.

No one was.

There has been zero credible reports of a 3rd team in on Cano in the $200+ range.

Every article published about the Yankees has said their line in the sand was $175, and the team President said he was gone if someone wanted to start a bidding war with them.

If there was any credible team in the bidding anywhere near Seattle Cano would be there right now instead of Seattle.

Jay-Z had visions of how he wanted Cano marketed and such, and him going to baseball Siberia trapped away in the northwest was not part of the plan. It just happened to be where the money way.

We know Detroit/Texas/Anaheim/LA/Boston/Both Chicago's weren't in on Cano based on other moves they've made and salary situations. Washington is the only other team I can think of that could afford a $200M+ deal and there has been no report of them having made a serious push.

There was no landing spot for him anywhere near that number other than Seattle, which is why he is there.

Just like Scott Boras, Jay-Z managed to get their management to buy into the mystery bidder myth.

So every thing that happens behind the scenes is published in a well creditable newspaper source, eh?

We all have some-a lot of issues/irritations with many others on here....but lol at using the ignore function. That's really sensitive. The ribbings don't last that long, especially from S&L. He'll fly off the handle every now and then but all is good and he typically moves right on*. Another one will bring it up for his pwnings quota....everyone is pretty harmless.

You just act like that there is no way that you could be wrong, when it's incredibly likely that there is no way you know all there is to know.

No way the Mariners just arbitrarily offered 65 million more than the Yankees. Also, who's to say the Yankee president was truthful when he was drawing that $175 million line in the sand. Let's not act like we know how these negotiations actually play out.

When the Yankees missed the playoffs, you knew they would be major players in ther free agent market. So far they've lost Curtis Granderson, but picked up Jacoby Ellsbury...Lost cano, but added Beltran...traded Chris Stewart but upgraded the catching position with Brian McCann. I would suspect they are not done yet as their infield is especially suspect now that Cano is gone, and they need help in both starting pitching and bullpen.

Heard yesterday that the Mariners signed a TV deal worth 2 BILLION dollars over the next 17 years.
2 BILLION!

so they can afford him, and should be able to sign more people,

THing is though..if you are him, wouldnt you want to sign with a team more realistic chances of winning?

David Price said through his agent that if traded to Seattle he will not sign an extension there.

They supposedly were considered the front runners to get him if they wanted him, which they did so they could pair him with King Felix.

He did say there are teams he would sign an extension with though, so Tampa is still open for business on that front.

Man, can you imagine if Seattle got to the playoffs, and they could run King Felix and David Price out there. They would be a tough out.

No idea.

That is what they were reading on Mike and Mike this morning. Maybe because it is the only ML team in the region? What would be the closest......

Causr they are the only sports watch for MILES in the northwest for 3 months of the year. Huge fan base, mileage wise, as well.

My understanding is it's a new Northwest Regional network in which the Mariners are the majority owner. So it's not like the Reds deal with Fox. The Mariners actually own the network so they get revenue from other broadcasts. Basically like YES network.
