I hate when people announce their retirement before they're actually done playing.

I don't mind it at all. Awesome gifts and allows the fans to know it's the last chance if they want to see them.

Have to wonder if places will do what they did for Rivera last season? Once in awhile these farewell things are kinda cool, but it is something that could get old.

I want a cap in MLB no doubt.
but when you go back and check the last 13 seaons, in the NFL there were 16 diff teams in the SB and 9 unique winners. MLB has 14 and 9 diff winners. Pretty close.

But yeah..those teams getting into the postseason are routinely the high salary teams so there def is a problem.

Too much would be awful.

However, Rivera and Jeter are special players above other special players. I did get annoyed with the #FarewellCaptain shit on twitter. He hasn't even started spring training yet.

Honestly, I don't know that there'd be another comparable situation in some time. Both played for a long time, were great players, class acts, didn't have legal/clubhouse/baseball rules issues and played their whole careers for one team. Sort of the epitome of what a person dreams of for athletes on their team.

On the reverse side, I'd love an A-Rod farewell tour. Every time he plays in a stadium for the last time, fans can bring as much rotten fruits and veggies as they can hold to throw at him. It'd be great!

yeah, you are probably right. Ya just hope it doesnt become commonplace and guys who would maybe be a possible HOFers. To me, I guess I would be a bit embarrassed as a player to have that extra attention.

Maybe, but I think guys like that, who've gotten a ton of attention throughout their careers probably know it's for the best. Baseball has to keep itself relevant in this day and age (like, just look at all the people on this site, who generally are in a younger crowd, who look at it as boring) and having those larger-than-life figures who draw this sort of accolades is crucial to that.

As long as it doesn't get overused, it's nothing but good for the game as far as publicity goes and with all the steroid crap it's had recently, I think they know they're helping out the sport with all this attention they're getting.

I think although some teams love to spend big money to contend, they can never spend enough to get the pitching and the lineup to be dominant and win year after year. It seems like the teams with great farm systems can contend against the high payroll teams.

I think a high cap of maybe 160 and a floor of 90 is needed for the sport. It's almost criminal to the Indians fans that their owner spends $68 Million a year less that Detroit. Even worse are the obscene $230 Million payroll the Yankees boast and the $214 Million payroll the Dodgers have

Going to some spring training games here in Orlando. Thinking about the Braves one day since it's maybe 4 miles from me and then obviously finding a way down to Lakeland for the Tigers. Too bad the Indians and Reds are in Arizona, would like to see them too but oh well. Maybe OT but the heat and humidity are quite a shock to the system after being in 76" of snow and bitter cold temps since December

I might have missed it discussed, but Stephen Drew and Ervin Santana aren't going to sign until June because a team would lose a #1 pick by doing so?

I think he would lead the league in HR if it weren't for Chris Davis.

Phillies are fuckin horrible. Braves easily ran over them today, that game was a joke today. 5th rolled around they rolled up 9 runs in the last 4 innings and breezed to a win. Bethancourt seems pretty legit but who knows because the Phillies are so bad, absolutely pounded that guy who came in for the starter

Read an article about that new rule started I think last year. Kyle Loshe's agent believe that is what kept him unemployed last year until mid march and others could be out until june. Basically the teams with the best 20 records cannot sign certain free agents before a certain date or lose a 1st round pick...

The Tigers have cut off contract talks with Scherzer, as Boras reportedly has out of control demands to sign any extension.

ESPN is reporting the deal the Tigers offered was north of $24 million for a bunch of years, and Boras wants no part of it.

Takes a brass set to turn down that kind of money knowing you are an arm injury away from seeing probably half that in free agency.
