One such teammate no longer needs an introduction, however, because he already received one on the practice field.
"Mike Mitchell hit me one time on a tunnel screen," freshman buzz-causer Dontre Wilson said this past weekend. "I wasn't looking and he just leveled me. But you know, it's football, you've gotta be tough."
Mitchell's own football I.Q. was on display during the play, as was his ability to tackle the whirling Wilson, who to this point has seemed untackleable.
"It was a little screen pass that I recognized," Mitchell said. "The ball just got in his hands and I was able to lay a big hit on him. It was fun."

Ya, Smith sucked in the 2006-2007 BCS National Championship game. I'm curious how you're blaiming a second one on him? Did he bone Boeckman's girlfriend right before the LSU game even though he was already in the NFL?

Pretty sure he did
LSU - Marcus Spears 20-yard interception return (Gaudet kick). LSU 21-7
2005- threw 3 interceptions, all leading to points for USC.

then went on to not be drafted

I could tell you, but 11W does a better job:
Linebackers
This is where things start to get dicey. Shazier is the obvious leader here. His second half of 2012 was as good or better than any other linebacker in the country, managing 11 tackles for loss and three sacks in his last five games. Had he played like that from the outset he would've earned the Butkus in a walk, and ideally he'll continue that form in 2013. After Shazier you've got Curtis Grant (who's been sidelined with a concussion and a career-long case of the not-quite-there-yets), Joshua Perry (who has a career total of five tackles), Camren Williams (who has four), and true freshman Mike Mitchell who has apparently worked himself to second in the depth chart at MLB despite, you know, being a true freshman.
Part of what will help here is the fact that Ohio State will likely continue playing a lot of nickel this season, meaning that linebackers won't be at a premium. Part of what won't help is the fact that unless Grant finally, finally realizes his potential, you're looking for answers from two guys with very little experience and a true freshman. If opposing defenses start finding soft spots in the middle of the defensive line, there's no Zach Boren walking through the door to save everyone's butts.

So it still sucks like last year. It seems we can't afford any injuries at that position.

You are correct, but I do feel pretty good about the young guys coming up up...it may have to be a "baptism by fire" scenario.

Not necessarily what you want when trying to get to the NCG. But at least early reports about one of our young guys (Mike Mitchell) are promising.

I think Mitchell will be the next great LB at OSU. He seems to have the mix of skill, athleticism, and intelligence you want in a LB. I think he'll be better than Lil Animal and AJ Hawk.

Be careful having positive outlooks about true freshmen on here, Webfire will jump on OSU fans for doing that on OSU threads.

Should I mention OSU one more time for good measure?

He has to be compared to someone no one has been compared to first. ;)

If TWHPIH doesn't take a measily $500 from a booster and have to rotate with Zwick in the TX game in the Shoe, we win that one. Now what most folks forget is Bucks had Vince Young on the ropes that night. Jimmy "The Liar" Tressel chooses to do one of the most asinine things any HC can ever do and that is rotate QBs during a game. Actually Zwick was moving the ball better in the first half and Ive always thought if Hamby catches the TD ball right in his hands in the end zone, Zwick stays in the game and maybe goes on to become the phenom everybody thought he was. After that he developed a facial tick and was never the same, knowing no matter what he did TWHPIH was gonna be Jimmy's boy.

Actually osu beats texas if hamby catches a td pass OR osu punts instead of trying a 50+ yard fg.

and beating Texas doesn't change the loss to that nasty PSU defense in October

If we beat TX we proabaly get into the NCG even with the PSU loss. But TWHPIH and Jimmy "The Liar" conspired to make sure that never happened.

How so? You have PSU, OSU, Texas and WVU all with 1 loss. I'm sorry, but that's only a 25% chance

The win over TX would have carried more weight than PSU's win over us with pollsters and computers. WVU? c'mon get real.

I do, I'm an alum. I just don't like to rehash shit from years ago.

It's a new team, new coach, new era.
