By the way my leftist OC friends, Carter was leading Reagan at this stage of the campaign in 1980 and we all know what ultimately happened.

I won't meltdown if BHO gets re-elected but I'll certainly be 100% convinced this country is nuts if he is.
I agree that BHO could easily lose but I just want to say it blows my mind how much Reagan blew out Carter if it is indeed true that Carter was winning at this point. The country must have been more volatile/open-minded in changing its mind back then because Reagan got 489 electoral votes. There is no way Romney or Obama are getting anywhere close to that number.

Same goes for 1988 when H.W. got 429 electoral votes. Wasn't Dukakis ahead after the conventions as well???

Perhaps more evidence that the country is firmly divided along ideological grounds???

I'd agree with you on that point. It is amazing how evenly divided we are at this point in American history. I believe we haven't been this divided since the Civil War.

Was that when Reagan cut the secret deal with the Iranians to release the hostages? Of course, Ronnie was no stranger to dealing with the Iranians, was he? We all got to find out more about that when Ollie North and his secretary became infamous.

In all seriousness, I believe the key word that year was "malaise".
