[LEFT]CBS News has learned that the NCAA will announce what a high-ranking association source called "unprecedented" penalties against both the Penn State University football team and the school."I've never seen anything like it," the source told correspondent Armen Keteyian.
NCAA President Mark Emmert will make the announcement Monday morning at 9 a.m. at the organization's headquarters in Indianapolis.
The penalties come in the wake of the independent report by former FBI Director Louis Freeh that chronicled repeated efforts by four top Penn State officials, including former football Joe Paterno, to conceal allegations of serial child sex abuse Jerry Sandusky over a 14-year period.
The NCAA had been awaiting the school's response to four key questions pertaining to the sex abuse scandal, including issues involving institutional control and ethics.

@schadjoe: Penn State facing loss of bowl/s and scholarships, but not so-called death penalty

If true...what is "unprecedented" about that?

@schadjoe: Penn State sanctions expected to be extremely harsh and could even be perceived as more damaging long-term than "death penalty"

Oh well. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

If they lose something like ALL scholarships for a year or two it's not technically the death penalty, but good luck fielding a team for years to come

They're actively taking down the statue right now.

Check ESPN or BTN; it's the only thing they're talking about. Pretty crazy.

The one guy on BTN (not Dave Revsine) seems to be toeing the B1G company line and essentially saying anything PSU didn't impose on themselves/agree to is overreactionary at this point in time.

He may be right, but wait until tomorrow morning's announcement to go there.

The announcement tomorrow is gonna be crazy. If it's gonna be harsh to the point the death penalty might have been better it's gotta be something like a 5-10 year bowl ban and like 1/2 the scholarships for 5 years.

That would suck for the BTN.

Wow. I saw people on Twitter saying it's time to start drinking in Happy Valley.

Screw that. It's time to start administering drugs intravenously.

To the top.

It sucks for anyone in the Big Ten or non-league that plays Penn State...possibly for years to come.

That is why I wanted the Big Ten to consider harsh penalties as well. Completely cut PSU out of TV revenue from the BTN until the ban is over. I wasn't even opposed to kicking them out completely if their (in)actions were going to hurt other conference members for a number of years and put a black eye on the conference pretty much forever. Other teams have been kicked out of conferences for a lot less.

But there is still doubt that he actually did cover it up. No one will ever know because paterno is dead and I expect Curley to throw paterno under the bus in his trail to save his own ass
"we see evidence of their proposed plan of action in February 2001 that included reporting allegations about Sandusky to the authorities. After Mr. Curley consulted with Mr. Paterno, however, they changed the plan and decided not to make a report to the authorities

I know actual football is a small piece to this entire puzzle, but I'm glad they're not scheduled to play Michigan until next year. You'd think it'd be a "easy" fix for B1G Conference members.

That's not unprecedented though. OSU and USC have both gotten those sanctions in the last 5 years; unless it's 10 years/ALL or something like that.

Joe Schad was making the comment that it may just be that they ruled without going thru the committee on infractions that makes it "unprecedented", and the punishments themselves may be par for the course. I doubt this is the case, but there's no telling.
