A 17-year-old varsity baseball player in suburban Cleveland is being banned from walking at his own graduation for racking up two too many unexcused absences. While those circumstances might be considered the fault of the athlete in most cases, Carrollton (Ohio) High senior Austin Fisher's case is a rather extraordinary one: His absences were all brought on by time he spent caring for his mother, who has spent the past six years battling breast cancer.

He needs to be able to walk. His mom deserves the chance to see her son walk. If I was a student at the school I would turn down my chance to walk unless they reversed the ruling. I know rules are rules but common sense needs to prevail here.

Here is a website to support him "Let Fish Walk" Facebook page

If he wanted to walk during graduation, he should have gone to class.

Props to the school for having a zero-tolerance on thugs like this.

Carrollton's close enough to Jefferson County for this to be part of some whole Bermuda Triangle of Retardation thing going on. Someone should scan brain waves to see if just being in proximity to that area makes you less intelligent.

I dont buy the fact that all of his unexcused absences are from taking care of his mother. Kids skip school for being "sick" all of the time. I'd be willing to bet that the kid could have taken proper steps to getting his absences excused. When I was in high school (graduated in 09) a hand written note from your parents (no matter the excuse) was good enough to get excused.

Walking during high school graduation to receive your diploma is the epitome of the beginning of the rest of your life. To do so, the individual must have presented himself in a responsible and caring manner for 4 years while dedicating himself to being educated in a civilized environment. Walking at graduation shouldn't be taken lightly.

When I was in high school I had to walk up hill 3 miles both ways in the freezing snow with no shoes.

Seriously though, My frosh and sophomore years where similar to how you stated, however they changed the rules during my Jr and Sr years and you were only given a couple of "unexcused" absences, which were any absence not accompanied by Dr note.

haha, i only added the "when I was in high school" because I was still in it just a few years ago, so I figured my experiences might be relevant. I guess it would depend on the school system, though.

I think now you can get ~10 unexcused abscences with a note.

"Rules are rules" and "zero tolerance" are code for "we are too lazy and stupid to actually think about the proper response to individual cases and situations".

Just because the winner gets crowned as "least retarded" doesn't mean there still wasn't a winner :)
