That "trick" your brain plays is ignorance.sjmvsfscs08;1130534 wrote:Anyone who says the lottery is useless is an uptight fool. Who doesn't have a dollar of spare income to have some fun with? Just the trick my brain plays and the resulting smile that happens from imagining what I'd do (and who I'd do, for that matter) is well worth $1.

I'd rather put it in the bank and still have a dollar earning more dollars than waste it on a game that you won't win.OSH;1130540 wrote:I'd rather spend a $1 on this lottery than a $1 at McDonald's.

Odds of winning with one thousand unique tickets: 1 in 175,712 (0.000569113%)
Well, looks like I will be buying some tickets.

Put it this way ... you have a 100% greater chance of winning if you buy two tickets instead of one ((0.000001138229%-0.000000569115%)/0.000000569115% = 1).
You have an infinitely greater chance of winning if you buy one ticket instead of zero ((0.000000569115%-0)/0 = error).
Edit: LJ beat me to it.

Actually you have a zero percent chance of winning anything and a 100% chance of losing at least $1.gorocks99;1130732 wrote:Put it this way ... you have a 100% greater chance of winning if you buy two tickets instead of one ((0.000001138229%-0.000000569115%)/0.000000569115% = 1).

I remember when a group of people from Westerville won the Powerball years ago. They interviewed one woman who had won and asked her what she was going to do with the money. She said "I'm gonna buy me a Harley and some new boobs!"

You have a 0.000000569115% chance of winning the jackpot, and a 99.999943085% chance of not winning the jackpot, mathematically. Realistically, you have a 0% chance of winning and a 100% chance of not winning.sleeper;1130748 wrote:Actually you have a zero percent chance of winning anything and a 100% chance of losing at least $1.

The fact is, I'll be a dollar richer than most of you come friday by simply placing it in my bank account.

You have a better chance of getting struck by lightning, in a plane, then crashing into the Artic where you will obtain clogged arteries from a diet of Seal blubber; and die from heart disease.OneBuckeye;1130802 wrote:Tell that to people who have died in a plane crash, been struck by lightning etc...

You are more likely to go bankrupt winning the lottery than you are filthy rich.
