Where you looking in Chitown? I would suggest you live on the far South Side, or Englewood. Classy neighborhoods, those.

Yet another thing politicians are doing that doesn't impact our country positively. Let's not fix our problems...

And those that are complaining about Wikipedia, it's not a bad site to use. It's not "academic" by any means. But there are studies that show it's more accurate than the Encyclopedia's that people have sitting on their shelves or online. Yes, you don't go to Wikipedia to do a research paper on molecular biology, but it's going to be more accurate on molecular biology than it will be on something like Britney Spears.

And who uses Wikipedia for shit like that to begin with? I can't think of one person who uses it for anything deeper than quick information on a topic that comes up in conversation.
chicago510;1057248 wrote:This. For example if I forget exactly what the normal blood sugar levels are after a meal in a healthy person I check Wiki because its FAST.

But for my thesis I'm writing on diabetic neuropathy, all of my citations are from the NE Journal of medicine and PubMed.

Both are considered research. I'm not going to go out and run my own studies to figure this out, I don't have the time nor the $$$$.
All of the college professors I had would not allow it as a citable source.

Which is why you use the sources cited on the article as your sources (if you're going to do that at all), and not the article itself.

North Side...my buddy lives in Lakeview, so we're trying to find something close to him. Us 3 are gonna get a place in June when his lease is up, so we're just trying to find something shitty/cheap until then.

yep. people try to discredit wikipedia, its kind of annoying. Everything is cited with the articles that the information came from linked at the bottom.

also, be glad you live in the U.S. where you can protest something like this. Web censorship is already a common practice in many countries.

SOPA is the dumbest thing in a while. If I wanted my internet to be censored I'd move to China. I'm more of a fan of things like "civil liberties".

Who in the world would ever cite wikipedia?

You use it so that you can get the information quickly and then cite from the source links or from a real academic journal or something. It really isn't that complicated.

It pains me to say this, but last year I was editing a group paper (was in my last year at Fisher getting my MBA at night) and two people in my group tried to cite Wiki. I let them fucking have it.

Wikipedia is the most accurate encyclopedia ever created. People think because anyone can edit it that it's not a valid source of credible information. This is largely a myth. Anytime an article is trolled, within 30 seconds to 1 minute it is changed and edited back to the correct statement. Wikipedia also requires you to link other documentation before making any random statement. It is accurate, not perfect, but accurate. The reason the academic community is against allowing wikipedia to be used as a reference is that they want people to be using their very expensive databases of academic journals so they can get paid and continue the dog and pony show.

As awful as the bill is, the blackouts are just protesting for the sake of feeling like you did something important. There was and still is zero percent chance this thing passes. It's been put on the back burner by both houses and Obama. Which means it's all but dead.

If they were being honest, they would have simply worded the bill as following "our business model no longer works, HELP!!!!"

If anyone posted or linked to any copyrighted info on the site, the owner of that copyrighted material could call up the US government and have all advertising payments to the site cut off, end advertising on the site, and even prevent browsers from taking you to the site. They could also sue Justin as the site owner for allowing copyright infringement on his site.

It's the same reason that Google has said they would basically have to shut down YouTube the day this bill became law.

Same.

I know that SOPA has been essentially killed until major changes are made, but is PIPA in the same boat? I thought that one made some progress through the Senate before all of the outrage hit.
