Just got out of my companies' quarterly meeting and the owner set goals for the 3rd quarter. It was proposed that the prize/bonus for the 3rd quarter would be a suite/loge (whatever they call them) for a Browns game. I chuckled...

They haven't decided if it will be a Browns game, Ipads, a trip to the casino (with spending money) or whitewater rafting.Commander of Awesome;1217041 wrote:You win and chose not to go, I know a guy willing to take the tickets off our your hands...

Richardson to the Rescue |

Better than 2011? Last season, the Browns used their fourth and fifth running backs after injuries to Jackson, Hillis and Hardesty. This season, Richardson figures to be a workhorse. 1 Comment |

As the Browns prepare to embark their second season under Pat Shurmur there are many questions that remain. With training camp opening Sat. July 28, we’re going to take a position-by-position analysis of the current roster as the team heads to camp over the next few weeks. Part two is the running back and fullback positions. Candidates: RB --Trent Richardson, Montario Hardesty, Brandon Jackson, Chris Ogbonnaya and Adonis Thomas FB -- Eddie Williams, Owen Marecic and Brad Smelley. When the Browns chose to let Peyton Hillis walk during free agency, they created a hole in the backfield as neither Hardesty or Jackson have shown they can be reliable featured backs. Not only did the Browns feel a need to address the quarterback position, they had to find a starting running back. And by all indications they did. Not wanting to be left at the altar and taking no chances they traded to move up from the fourth spot to number three to get the premier running back in this year’s draft. Richardson (5-9, 230, first year, Alabama) – Taken with the third overall pick, the Browns are expected to make Richardson the focal point of the offense. He could be plugged in and used the way Hillis was in 2010 as Richardson can pass block, as well as be an effective receiver coming out of the backfield. Some draft experts said Richardson is the best back to come out of college since Adrian Peterson. Richardson can make things a lot easier for Brandon Weeden or Colt McCoy or whoever is the quarterback as the running game has to be better than last year and cause teams to have to game plan against someone. Jackson (5-10, 216, 6th year, Nebraska) -- Jackson was penciled in to be the third down back after signing as an unrestricted free agent from the Packers in 2011. However, he suffered a toe injury and was on injured reserve before he got out of the starting blocks. He is being counted on to take that role over again in 2012. Hardesty (6-0, 225, 3rd year, Tennessee) – Hardesty was hampered in 2011 by a calf injury after missing his rookie season with a torn ACL. He had 266 yards (3.0 avg.) with no touchdowns. His best game was a 95-yard performance on 33 rushes against the Seahawks. He also caught 14 passes on the season. This is a put up or shut up year for Hardesty after Tom Heckert made a bold move in 2010 by trading up to get Hardesty in the second-round after Hardesty had an injury-prone college career. Ogbonnaya (6-0, 225, 3rd year, Texas) – Ogbonnaya was pressed into service after the top three backs went down with injury. He responded with a 121-yard rushing game against Jacksonville and finished second on the team with 334 yards (4.6 avg.) and one touchdown. He also caught 23 passes. However, he could be the odd man out if the projected top three are healthy. Thomas (5-9, 185, rookie, Toledo) – Thomas came out of nowhere as a tryout invitee at the rookie minicamp and was signed to the roster. The Browns thought enough of him to let speedster Armond Smith go. With a good preseason, Thomas will be a candidate for the practice squad. Marecic (6-0, 245, 2nd year, Stanford) – Marecic was the starter for the 2011 season after being drafted in the fourth-round out of Stanford, but suffered two concussions as a rookie. He had just four carries for 8 yards and caught five passes. He should be better, but the head injuries are worrisome. Williams (6-1, 242, 2nd year, Idaho) – Williams was on the practice squad and was called up to the active roster when Marecic was injured. He could be a dark horse candidate to replace Marecic, but didn’t help his cause missing the spring practices due to an injury. Smelley (6-2, 235, rookie, Alabama) – The Browns selected him in the seventh-round and the former lead blocker for Richardson could have the same role in the NFL. Smelley has the versatility to play both fullback and tight end. Better than 2011? Last season, the Browns used their fourth and fifth running backs after injuries to Jackson, Hillis and Hardesty. Thomas Clayton was used and Ogbonnaya came in off the Texans’ practice squad and started with two days practice. Thus, the Browns should be much stronger at running back this year with Richardson being the workhorse. Hillis was the leading rusher in 2011 with just 587 yards and three touchdowns, so it should be easy for a healthy Richardson to exceed those numbers. Marecic was a rookie and struggled besides suffering concussions. He should be much better in his second season. Smelley could be a very interesting addition. He was impressive in the OTAs and the minicamp. http://cle.scout.com/2/1199510.html |

Tried to PM you BR, but your inbox was full.
Read on OBR that the staff think Benjamin will be good, and the staff is really impressed with Swartz. Both could go a long way in helping our offense this season.

Browns' position analysis: the quarterbacks

As the Browns prepare to embark their second season under Pat Shurmur there are many questions that remain. With training camp opening Sat. July 28, we’re going to take a position-by-position analysis of the current roster as the team heads to camp over the next few weeks.
We start with the quarterback position.
Candidates: Brandon Weeden, Colt McCoy, Seneca Wallace and Thaddeus Lewis.
The hottest topic around the Browns naturally surrounds the quarterback position. Until Shurmur declares ‘officially’ that Weeden is the starter, the talk will continue.
Weeden (6-3, 220, rookie, Oklahoma State) -- Weeden was taken 22nd overall and he is the heavy favorite to be the starter when the Browns open the season against the Eagles on Sept. 9. He displayed everything you want to see in a franchise quarterback during the rookie OTAs, the OTAs and the mandatory minicamp. The first thing you want to see in a quarterback is throwing the ball and Weeden showed he can make all of the throws.
However, all of what he has done so far has been in shorts without a pass rush. His biggest challenge will being able to thoroughly understanding the offense, handling pressure from the pass rush and being able to read NFL defenses.
McCoy (6-1, 215, 3rd season, Texas)—Last year’s starter, McCoy faces an uphill battle to retain his starting job. McCoy’s battle might be more for the backup position, rather than the starter. However, there is a sentiment among many that think the Browns will either trade or release McCoy before the regular season begins.
McCoy is just 25 and would appear to be a stronger backup than Wallace, given the fact that McCoy played ahead of Wallace until he was injured. That along with the fact he is under contract for about one fourth of the salary being paid to Wallace is a reason to keep him. McCoy has started 21 games in the NFL with a 6-15 record. McCoy threw 14 touchdowns last season while throwing 11 interceptions. His rating was 74.6.
Wallace (5-11, 205, 10th season, Iowa State)—Wallace will turn 32 on Aug. 6 and he has been a career backup. He took over after McCoy was knocked out last year and was unimpressive. He finished the season with a 65.4 rating. He threw two touchdowns and had two interceptions. Wallace was outspoken about not feeling like it was his job to be the mentor to McCoy in the West Coast offense, but has said he welcomes being the mentor to Weeden. He said during minicamp that he wouldn’t be happy being the third quarterback and said he didn’t think both he and McCoy would be with the team at the start of the season.
Lewis (6-2, 200, 2nd season, Duke)—Lewis is the least known commodity on the roster after being picked up after the preseason last year. He has only played in preseason games and has yet to play in a regular season game. Lewis’ only hope to stick with the Browns is if they move either McCoy or Wallace to make room for him.
Better than 2011? The Browns are convinced that Weeden’s strong arm will make the receivers and the offense better than last year. The other three quarterbacks are still on the roster with another year in the system. The Browns need to decide if they keep McCoy and Wallace to go along with Weeden. It might not be a bad idea given the fact that the Browns have had just one quarterback play all 16 games in a season since 1999.

One of the biggest questions for me this year, is Pat Shurmur. IMO, there were times last year that he just looked in over his head.

I tend to be more patient than most when it comes to team decisions, i.e. hirings, signings draft picks etc. I might not agree with all of them but I tend to sit back and say "Well let's see if they know what they are doing. Maybe it is just optimism I don't know. Another coaching year like last year would change my mind.KnightRyder;1217779 wrote:times he just looked over his head? yea all the time. hiring shumur could be proof the browns might be the worst organization in professional sports

this is laughable. Shurmur was a new coach, with no head coaching experience, in a year with no training camp, and no communications with players. He was going to struggle, but to say it's the worst professional organization in sports, because of 15 years, is just laughable.KnightRyder;1217779 wrote:times he just looked over his head? yea all the time. hiring shumur could be proof the browns might be the worst organization in professional sports

I honestly don't know who he is, but Kiante Tripp got arrested on burglary charges in Georgia.
Haven't AFC North players figured out that going to Georgia results in potential legal issues for them?

what is laughable is the browns offense. not one single playmaker in 15 years. laughable is the amount of money that mike holmgren gets paid to run the browns. laughable is heckert on draft day. laughable is pat shumur calling a play to hand the ball of to a back up tight end who never took a hand off in pro , college, high school or pee wee football and not to mention shumurs ability or lack of at clock management. shurmur was a fail in st louis and he failing in cleveland. all mike holmgren did was hire a bunch of his beer drinking poker playing cronies to come join him cleveland. this browns organization is not the same one that went to baltimore. as much as didnt like modell his teams were for the most part competitive. this organization sucks. every year in cleveland its like ground hog day. same old garbage i cannot believe they try to pan this crap out as professional football. yes the browns might be the worst organization in professional sports. tell me one that is worse.DeyDurkie5;1217872 wrote:this is laughable.
