therein lies the problem with drafting a 28 year old qb. you have to play him right away or you'll have a 30 year backup that you drafted in the first roundCommander of Awesome;1165760 wrote:What if MCoy comes in and lights it up? That's a good situation for the Browns.

The Browns will not allow Colt "to light it up" #/Colt's Daddy

If Cleveland's QB is "lighting it up" I really don't care who it is.

No you don't. You play the guy who does the best in camp. Draft positions should be irrelevant once camp starts. In your world, Brady would have never started.dazedconfused;1165765 wrote:therein lies the problem with drafting a 28 year old qb. you have to play him right away or you'll have a 30 year backup that you drafted in the first round
Nobody knows how Weedon will play. If Mccoy outplays him...he starts. It's really that simple.
Jeanmar Gomez was an undrafted baseball player. Should he sit on the bench behind high drafted pitchers? Of course not.

if colt wins the job, whatever, we'll roll with him. but i guess my point is if they just wanted a qb to compete with colt with the mindset of if he beats him out, great, but if not, he can sit behind him and learn the ropes, they could have drafted osweiler, foles, cousins or wilson in one of the later rounds. they didn't do that and drafted weeden in the first round. weeden's also 28 and cannot really afford to sit out too much time. the team and the front office has invested too much in him not for him to play.Footwedge;1165859 wrote:No you don't. and when you say brady, i'm assuming you mean quinn. he was six years younger than weeden and the team could afford to let him sit and watch and learn the nfl game because the team was winning in 07 behind da (although i imagine the plan was for frye/da to be the stopgaps for a few weeks until quinn was ready but no one foresaw that team winning 10 games). once it went south in 08, however, the team was quick to get brady in there because you can't have first round picks just rot the bench
also, i don't get the jeanmar comparison. the baseball draft is nowhere near as important as the football draft in terms of relevance to the upcoming season. not to mention baseball players have to go through 4 to 6 levels of minor league play before reaching the big leagues. development in the minors is much more important than draft position for baseball.

Not really. Weeden very well COULD bust but Holmgren couldn't just sit on his hands and trot an undersized 3rd round FAILURE of a QB back out there. Unlike some people on this board (cough-YOU-cough) he has a sense of urgency to win NOW. Not tank a season and pray for Matt Barkley.SportsAndLady;1165587 wrote:You have to remember BR and Weeden are BFFs

This is ALL that really needs to be said. Those still in the "let's roll another year with McCoy camp", need to give it up. They didn't use a 1st round pick on a 28 year old QB to let him sit & learn. Weeden is going to be given EVERY chance possible. They aren't saying it now but it's his job to lose. Unless he gets injured or looks Ryan Leaf-like in OTA's & training camp, which is HIGHLY unlikely, he'll be the starter.dazedconfused;1165909 wrote:if colt wins the job, whatever, we'll roll with him. but i guess my point is if they just wanted a qb to compete with colt with the mindset of if he beats him out, great, but if not, he can sit behind him and learn the ropes, they could have drafted osweiler, foles, cousins or wilson in one of the later rounds. they didn't do that and drafted weeden in the first round. weeden's also 28 and cannot really afford to sit out too much time. the team and the front office has invested too much in him not for him to play.
You're assessment about later round QB's is spot on. If the intent was to have a "competition" they would've grabbed an Osweiler, Foles or Cousins in a later round. They DIDN'T. They used a FIRST rounder on Weeden. He's your starter regardless of the "spin" H&H are throwing out there.
If this regime is smart, as soon as OTA's are over they declare Weeden the starter. It's OK to imply a competition so it doesn't look like they are handing him the job NOW...but once he's taken snaps in OTA's or even rookie mini-camp Shurmur needs to do what Shanahan did and declare Weeden the starter and end any potential speculation/controversy. Regardless of how he looks in rookie mini-camp expect to hear things like "he's way ahead of schedule" and "he's really grasping this offense."

They have 3 playoff teams in their division and 2 Super Bowl contending teams in their division. Even if Weeden has a good year, they're 8-8 at best. Why not take a WR with that 22nd pick, roll with McCoy for ONE MORE year, then draft your actual franchise QB (aka, a top 3 pick...who isn't 29 years old by the time the season is going on).
What's one more year of bad football when we've already been through so many?

I just find it hilarious that people see a QB drafted in the first round and automatically assume the franchise is turned around. Forget the fact that the odds of Weeden busting is higher than the odds of him being a Super Bowl contending, elite QB.
Who cares if we have a decent QB now? It's like Browns fans are so sick of bad QB play, that they're ecstatic when we have a decent one. You're not going to win anything with a decent QB, you're just going to be a decent team. Whoohooo so exciting... /sarcasm

Bet fans felt that way in 2007 when a piece of crap QB, a one year wonder WR and a rickety knee TE caught lightning in a bottle and went 10-6. Don't think too many people saw that coming. All it takes is for everything to click and we could see the same thing happen again. Not saying it will but it's not impossible.SportsAndLady;1165914 wrote:What are they going to "win now"? LOL

Nice attitude though with the "let's lose" mentality. Glad the front office wants to at least TRY.

This guy is very well respected in scouting/drafting circles..
Russell Lande ‏ @RUSSLANDE
Love Browns 1st 3 picks as Richardson, Weeden & Schwartz should start in 2012. Also, like a number of the Browns other picks ...
Russell Lande ‏ @RUSSLANDE
Like Browns pick of slot wr T. Benjamin as he is explosive & elusive with big play ability when he gets ball in open field.
Russell Lande ‏ @RUSSLANDE
Browns get good value with pick of LB JM Johnson as he has talent to start as OLB or ILB for them & should challenge to do so as rookie.
Russell Lande ‏ @RUSSLANDE
With Boise St having so many good players, I believe DE B. Winn was overlooked & has starters potential for Browns.
Russell Lande ‏ @RUSSLANDE
Do not be shocked if the Browns last pick B. Smelley make an impact catching 40+ passes as he is a versatile receiving threat.
Russell Lande ‏ @RUSSLANDE
@Ruyf - The Browns average draft grade came to 6.04 which is 7th of all the teams this year. I will post all team grades within week.
Russell Lande ‏ @RUSSLANDE
@GregLema - I thought Hughes was more of a late round / free agent type, but he showed much better athleticism in workout then expected.
Russell Lande ‏ @RUSSLANDE
@rajivbais - Smelley is an H-Back, TE & fullback who excels athletically & really is a good receiving threat.

Just like the odds of Barkley, Luck & RG3 busting out vs being a 'Super Bowl contending, elite QB" could also be high. You never know what they've got UNTIL they play.SportsAndLady;1165917 wrote:I just find it hilarious that people see a QB drafted in the first round and automatically assume the franchise is turned around. You're conveniently omitting the fact that IF Weeden is 22-23 he's a top 5 pick in this draft. Some think he's more ready than Luck, who is considered the "sure thing" in some facets of his game. But he has a better chance of "busting" because of your prejudice against his age.
Your "suck for <insert name of "the next big thing at QB>" mentality doesn't guarantee landing a "Super Bowl contending, elite QB" either. But at least we know two of the people on here who'd rather see them lose than try to improve.

You and others have stated the ridiculous claim that Weedon has to start because he was a high draft choice. Well, sorry, it doesn't work that way...in sports or in life. He who puts up numbers wins. When you get into the real world you'll understand that.
Now KGFY.
