I think it has alot to do with your music interest, such as rock, country, jazz and others, but I was never a fan of the Beatles and don't consider them in my top three. I am not saying that the people that consider them to be great are wrong, if that is the kind of music they like to enjoy, but they just don't interest me as far as instrumental talent or lyrics. I enjoy bands like Zeppelin, AC/DC, Clapton, The Who and other rock groups from the 70's and don't expect everyone to agree with me on my choices. I just don't think there will ever be one greatest band of all time.

Now is their music still relevant? Not even close. Musically none of the Beatles are considered tops. THeir music was very simple to play and arrangements can be put together by a jH music teacher in about one day.

Maybe constrained by technology, when the Beatles split up 4 track recording was about the limits of technology. Now music is much mroe complicated and hence sounds much better then what the Beatles put out.

Really if you look at it, a musician like Elton John, Pete Townsend, Lars Ulrich, Geddy Lee, Slash are much better musicians then any of the Beatles.

Well 2 of them are dead that might have something to do with it. Paul McCartney still sells out at age 70 and their music is still relevant because you still hear it on commercials and movies etc... 50 years later. Elton John better musician than Paul McCartney? surely you jest.

Well, except for when you posted the gazillion Journey videos and then based their "superiority" over DT or anyone else based solely on album sales. Everyone loves the "Nickelback argument". THEY SELL A LOT SO THEY HAVE TO BE GOOD!!!!


At least DT has the instrumental virtuoso reputation that would give a person picking them something to back it up. They just don't have the popularity, as groups that basing careers off 10+ minute songs aren't going to get airplay or be overly accessible to most people. Personally, I'd at least put them in the upper tier, but I can see why others wouldn't. They're not as bad as some prog groups, but they do sacrifice a lot of accessibility in order to show off their skills. And it's hard to gauge how the loss of Portnoy will affect them down the road. I'd put their newest album (first w/o him) down towards the bottom of their releases. "On the Backs of Angels" and "Bridges in the Sky" are pretty killer and a couple more are really good, but overall it's kinda blah like I thought Octavarium was.
