In my humble opinion

Songwriting/musical range and innovation - The Beatles. End of Discussion. Unfortunately, the lack of live performances during their salad days keeps 'em from consideration as the GOAT.
Technical ability - Yes gets the nod over Rush due to bench depth. :)
Performing Act - Led Zep. Maybe the E Street Band could sniff their jock straps.

But I would say that the band that probably would win on points when all of the above are considered.
.. Pink Floyd over the Rolling Stones

LOL at Steely Dan and Boston. They couldn't even read the tabs of Dream Theater. If Dream Theater is not in the top 2,000, Journey isn't in the top 10,000.

Bonham was great.
I Wear Pants;1027891 wrote:Are we posting "the greatest band ever" or some bands we think are talented musically(stupid metric IMO) or should we focus on those we think write good songs/lyrics?
It is an opinion, I am not asking anyone to justify why they think a group is great or try to convince anyone else that that group is the greatest; just asking who in your opinion is the greatest. Many have seemed to miss that point.
ccrunner609;1027981 wrote:Buckethead is GOAT
Buckethead is a very good guitarist, but there is many MANY that are much more skilled IMO. And I am a HUGE Buckethead fan, but guys like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, Vinnie Moore, Eric Johnson, John Petrucci, Jason Becker (when he could still pick up a guitar), etc. have much more skill than Brian Carrol aka Buckethead. Hell, Paul Gilbert instructed Buckethead.

ccrunner609;1028542 wrote:i used steely and Boston to make your example of being talented a joke. It is common knowledge in music circles and experts that a band like Boston or Steely are as you put it "supremely talented instrumentally."that doesnt make them the greatest bands alive. Just face it, dream theatre isnt a top 100 band of all time.
Is it top 2000 or 100? Make up your mind. Also, read the very first post. I said IMO they are the greatest. I never claimed them to be without a doubt the greatest ever and that everyone else should believe it, just that I think they are the greatest based on my musical preferences.

I could use the exact logic you just said to me to dispute Journey being a great band, however, I have higher intelligence than that of a gym teacher and realize there is no real way to measure how great one thinks a band is or isn't, it is a matter of preference.

Have fun on winter break!

I'll be honest, I haven't heard every album, but what I have heard I liked. Do you like Brand New? I haven't heard an album of theirs that I haven't liked.

Again, how does that dispute what I am saying? I have stated multiple times that, in my mind, Dream Theater is the greatest. I'm not sure what you don't get or understand. You are a gym teacher after all, so you should be somewhat educated.

Journey has been around much, much longer than Dream Theater. Record sales mean nothing to me when I judge how talented a musical act is. There is a lot of shit music out there like Kanye West, 50 cent and Journey. Just because they appeal to people doesn't make them better.

So album sales are the defacto measure of the quality of a band?

Devil and God is their best album by far IMO.

I agree. deja entendu and the devil and god are raging inside me are two of my favorite albums, regardless of the band.

liked a decent amount of those songs on the devil and god..but it wasn't even close to deja imo. deja is a classic album...every song is great..also, lonesome is good, the moon and Antarctica is better. could be that im stoned though

Fair enough though I still disagree (yay opinions!). I love Deja Entendu but I think that their writing and instrumentation had progressed a lot in between Deja and TDAG. I also like that it seemed to move on to more adult material lyrically.

I think they are overrated as a band. I never did see what was so great about them, they had a couple of good songs back in their day but so did the Rolling Stones and many more bands. I don't think anyone can claim to be the greatest band ever, because people like different types of music and fans of hard rock and heavy metal would not consider the Beatles better than Zeppelin or AC/DC for example, but the same would be expected from country music fans, they would not consider Zeppelin or AC/DC better than one of their cowboy groups either.

They had a wider range than bands like the Stones. Versatility, harmony, lyricism (outside of some of the corny McCartney stuff), and great instrumental talent.

The best instrumental talent ever on one of their songs was the lead guitar on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps".
